Is my pup part basenji?

    I got my Sadie girl from a shelter and they had told us that she was an Australian Shepherd/ Pointer mix. But through observing her behaviors compared to my brother’s mini Aussie, as well as my mothers Pointer, she seems to have very few characteristics of either.

    I didn’t hear any sort of bark out of her until she was at least 2 y/o and the bark she has now is more like a little scruffy noise, she self grooms constantly, gets on the counters, is very independent and only gives out cuddles on her own terms, she’s AMAZING with all types of dogs, despite years of training she wanders wayyy too far whenever I let her off leash and will only come back when she’s explored all that she’s wanted to, shreds all paper products (paper towels are gold to her), digs huge holes all over the yard, chews things whenever I don’t give her enough attention, is very observant and always aware of what’s going on, will pause on walks to let people pass because she doesn’t like people walking behind her, and she doesn’t hurt cats, frogs, lizards, ducks, squirrels or chickens but she loves to stalk them and chase them. I feel like researching Basenjis has helped me understand so much more about her than I had before, but she could just be a little quirky girl made up of a beautiful mix of dog breeds. Please let me know what y’all think!

    @khayden Well, I gotta say... THAT is THE best description of behaviors I've seen for quite some time. If I hadn't seen the picture I'd be saying "Yeah, that definitely sounds Basenji to me." That I have seen the picture just further bolsters your case in my mind. I kinda like that she's fuzzy! I like her ears too. A tad too big, but really cute.

    @jengosmonkey thank you!!! And yes I’m saving up for a DNA test!! Thank you so much for you feedback it’s very helpful!! I’m only 20 and she’s only 5, but I love her characteristics so much that I will only be getting Basenjis for my future dogs. Safe to say that I’ve joined the club!!

    @khayden Our first Basenji was a rescue. I tip toed into it. Always thought they were a bit odd having been raised with Shelties. He was so special. We're on our second and third now. I love all kinds of dog breeds, but like you I'm hooked on Basenjis now. They just crack me up. Insane non stop entertainment and affection all the time. :smiling_face_with_heart-eyes: :thumbs_up:

    That sounds Basenji-like to me and even her white markings look similar. She sounds like a bundle of joy I'm glad you found her 🤗

    I think the behaviors are compelling. Hope you can confirm suspicions. I am guessing one of the parents were full or half basenji. Gorgeous!

    Okay he's cute, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if a mix... but without a DNA test, no way to really tell. Barking... well basenjis bark, but for most it is a single Boof.. pause... booof. Not the bow wow wow rhythm of other dogs. Oh shedding... they shed but nothing like my other breeds. We get a shed out in early summer. Otherwise, unless sick, not much shedding. I have only had 3 basenjis... they all hated water, one so much that getting her to potty if the ground is we is a serious issue.

    As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.

    @ChristyRutherford: When I went to Thailand, the dogs there looked very basenji like. It was hard to see them in the shape they were. Definitly not spoiled as dogs are here. Very thin and most had mange. They are wild there, and you dont pet them, they just kinda run around like squirrles or raccoons. It was very hard for me to see them. I took some pictures, of the healthier ones. I will try and find them. They tended to stay at the temples "temple dogs" because the Monks would care, somewhat, for them. The ones running in towns and villages were much worse looking, some. I would have taken them all home. Goes to show what how different people (not just "us/them) but all of us are different form each other. The guide and I had a wonderful time comparing and contrasting our cultures. I let her know how I treat my dog, and although she said it was nice and she liked dogs, I knew she thought I was crazy. I know what you mean. I was in there a couple of summers ago. Some of the dogs at the temple had mange so bad that they were missing a good portion of their fur not mention the number of dogs wondering around with limps and crooked limbs from being hit by bikes and cars. Funny story…before I went with UT the students from the University there came and two of them stayed with my parents. I brought them over to my apartment to hang out one evening and they went wild for Manning. I mean they took picture after picture and didn't want to put him down. Poor Rascal, my mutt, was sitting there like "hey what about me?" Finally, they explained how the King in Thailand has basenjis and has made them very popular. They were even wearing polo shirts with little stitched pictures of the King's dog on them. Here is a link about the King's dog Tongdaeng, a basenji mix. There is a great book called The Story of Tongdaeng. Inside the book are pictures of the king surrounded by Tongdaeng and his other basenjis.     Andrea - I want to thank you for recommending the obedience website. We have all begun a program of dog training - fun for the kids especially. We have her (and the Jack Russell mix) sitting before they are allowed out, and they must "stay!" sitting even when the door opens until they are given a command to "go!" Even if the cat is just outside the door taunting them with his wicked yellow eyes to chase him - they must sit and stay until told to go. And now, after a month of constant training from all of us - they do it. In fact, both now sit at the door before it even opens anticipating the command. We also have hand gestures for the verbal commands - probably not the conventional ones, but they work for us and the pooches. We've started working on "come" now - Kandy definately doesn't like it, but she is beginning to obey "come-sit" for her treats. No treat without obeying. She's smart and quick to learn, and so is Sammy, so we're having a good time with them. Well, we did until Sammy went into heat and began making us all nutty with her constant whining and alternate aggressive behavior (she and Kandy had some real loud and nasty tussles) I had little time for the internet, for all the extra work it caused and the lack of sleep! But she's nearly done with that, and both are returning to whatever poses for normal and are getting along again. We're so happy with the two of them, and Kandy is so unique and special. What a treasure - wierd noises that she makes and all! MamaofMany
