Basenji Talk

  • I didn't know where else to post this. It is the funniest thing I have heard in forever.

A good friend of mine who knows we just got a Basenji sent this to me, enjoy

"Last night I went to Costco to buy a bag of food for my neighbor’s dog, (my neighbor is sick at home) Already in line, a woman behind me asked me if I had a dog.

I stared at her (those who know me will imagine my gaze) ...but then why would I be buying dog food...right? So, on impulse I told her no, that I didn’t have a dog, that I was starting the dog food diet again, and that I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital the last time, but I ended up 15 pounds less! I told her that it was the perfect diet and that all you had to do is carry the kibbles in your pocket and eat one or two every time you feel hungry (I have to mention that practically everyone in line was interested in my story).

Frightened, the woman asks me if I ended up in the hospital because the dog food had poisoned me. I answered...of course not! I was admitted because I started barking, chasing a cat and got hit by a truck"

  • ROTFLMAO! that was excellent!

  • Your sense of humor will serve you well as an excellent basenji slave.

  • Lol that was a good one

  • Truly hilarious.

  • OMG, Love it! I hope you and Zaki are well. Best Paul (Imo is growing like a weed and learning more every day.)

  • @paul-warren He (and I) love it when he curls up on my lap. Lately there doesn't seem to be the same amount of space and he keeps looking at me like, 'make your lap bigger, I'm tired' He seems to get bigger each day.

  • OMG, That is sweet and so Basenji! Amazing how quickly they grow. How old is Zaki? Imo is just under 14 weeks. Take good care and stay safe.

I've been involved with Basenjis for many years and can only remember one occasion where one Basenji was startled by one particular noise ( ice cream mixer van starting up), otherwise they seem completely immune to noises even the loudest ones. Of course there will always be the odd exception.

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

I think I saw Sophie on a b video website and I was so glad that someone else's B made that noise I showed it to my husband and daughter. Thanks for posting that video because as a new B owner we thought we had some kind of devel dog!!! She does it the most to our oldest dog Josie. There are nights she even does it from under our covers in bed when she hears Josie moving out in the living room. Too Funny!!!!

I use a baby gate in the hallway to seperate the bedrooms/bathrooms from the rest of the house. The 16yr old cat lives in the bedrooms. My B's have the rest of the house. I had to experiment with gates though. The lattice kind my B girl used like a ladder. Stuck her little paws in the openings and climbed. I now have a vertical slat installed to the wall. I had to have extra pieces attahced to the bottom b/c she would wiggle her shoulders under and then stand up popping the hindges from the wall.

I live in North Carolina, right on the coast and we have hot, hot, humid summers. Sahara loves to sit on the back steps and lay in the sun, but only after I have frozen her with AC, haha! She hates the cold, when I got her it was still cool nights here and I had a time getting her potty trained b/c she just hated the cold weather. I could not find any dog sweaters to fit her, she was only 8 wks. old, the stores were out of them, so I got smart one night and made her one from the arm of one of my husbands hunting thermal underware. She was much happier then once I got it on her, she hated me putting that thing around her neck and legs. I have her sweaters now, got them 75% off this summer. She hates the rain also, but she has on great ocassion gone on her own to potty while it was downpouring, wonders of wonders, most of the time I have to put a leash on her and pull her outside when it is raining, she will go, but not unless I keep saying, "Go Potty, Sahara". She runs like a mad dog back through her doggie door. Can't wait to see what she does if we have snow this winter, should be interesting.
