Looking for young/puppy Basenji

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hey there, I am finally no longer travelling for work and can adopt a Basenji! I am located on the Gulf Coast and am having some difficulty finding breeders in my area. I run constantly and live in a very dog friendly area that would be amazing to share with a Basenji. All help is appreciated.

  • Life is full of changes. What would you do if you were suddenly traveling again? Or if your activity level changed? Would you look for a new home for the dog?

  • Not at all! I have family and friends who would be more than willing to help. My work travel in the future will be limited to a week at most as well.

  • Glad things are settling down for you. Now is a great time to get on breeders puppy lists. Go to the Basenji Club and contact breeders in states close enough for traveling to. If you're interested in a bit older, be sure to ask if they have any or know of another breeder who may have gotten a puppy back that didn't work out. Good luck in your search.

@rjbasenji - this is the time to align with a responsible breeder for a pup maybe in 2021. Because Basenjis only come in season once a year and their litter size is only 4-6 puppies, it is difficult to find one especially will all the people that "want" one... If you can visit with a breeder that would help you or if not call them on the phone and tell them why you think that a Basenji would be a good fit for your family/lifestyle.

Hi there, Funny enough, my guy is from a breeder in Pembroke - just down the road from Ottawa! They've had litters on and off over the years, but I'm not sure whether they're active at the moment (last I heard, one of the moms was in a "false heat" and they might try again with her in the summer). In any event, it's easiest to politely contact whatever active breeders you can find in Ont/QC, and I find they're very nice and often able to refer you to others should their bookings be full. That's how I did it. Best of luck!!

Hello, go to www.basenji.org and search for breeders... by state and there are some from Canada... you are most likely looking at possible breedings for fall/winter of 2020. Note however it is IMPORTANT that you go to a responsible breeder so registration papers are important as many BYB's use other types of registrations that are not registered by AKC or the Canadian Kennel club and you need to follow up on health testing youself... if they are doing responsible health testing before breeding the results are public at www.ofa.org. This is important in order to find a responsible breeder... that health tests before breeding here is a link on how to find and interview and find a responsible breeder... and this is important...https://www.basenji.org/learn/ScreeningBreeders.htm

Research isn't over until you've read my Put-Off and the other articles about life with a Basenji while not doing the Breed a disservice ! Details are in the signature block - and talk to Bushwacker. She takes care of temperament and quality !

@debradownsouth I disagree about letting Bs pack with older dogs. I had my B for 16 years and she was trained by older well-trained dogs. They do model their behavior after the dogs because they want to be members of the Pack. I also had 2 Wolves and my B accepted them immediately. When I would walk the dog and the Wolf, the other dogs in the Park dragged their owners out of the Park. Canines, no matter the Breed, are terrified of Wolves. I have video of my B and my Wolf engaging in mutual grooming. Due to that I am convinced that the Basenji is related to the Ancient Wolves. If that were not the case my B would have been terrified just like the other Dogs in the Park. She adored her Wolves and grieved when they passed.

Also, check with Camp Basenji. Although she's in FL, she has homes up north and is willing to transport to the right home. Contact her because she doesn't list most dogs on the site. http://www.campbasenji.org/
