when to move from puppy food

Basenji Feeding
  • My basenji Korben is now 5 months old and 19 lbs. He is still on puppy food and generally eats 2/3 of a cup twice a day. When should we move him to adult food and how much should we be feeding him?

  • @lory-h - I have never used puppy food with any of my litters, pups were raised on the same good quality grain free as all my adults. So no reason to not change to adult food now... again, good quality kibble. I also mix with Veggies, cooked/raw, Fruits, yogurt, meat (raw and cooked)... I change up kibble every few weeks so they are always getting something different. I never have to worry about changing foods as they are used to changes all the time. As far as how much, that is depending on the pup... hard to give direction without seeing pictures... and you can't really go by what food packages say as they are only general.

  • Agreed! Never used a puppy food...
We have ducks so duck eggs, yogurt, all kind of raw or cooked meats/veggies.

  • I think the standard recommendation is a year. I doubt there would. be a big problem switching to adult food a bit early or late. But when you switch you want to do that gradually.

I'd have to look, and I'm not sure I have records for that late, but 19 pounds at 5 months seems about right. Hard to say though. Some have posted here with what I'd say are insanely low weights and they have done OK.

As for how much to feed him, the best way is to look, keeping in mind that at under a year it's probably better to err on the high than the low side. Cups are not such a reliable way to do it because some mixes have a lot more calories than others per unit volume.

Seems like everything is good. No doubt 1000% better than what they would have gotten in Africa.

  • There's an old saying horse people have, "the eye of the master maketh the horse". IMO it is the same with dogs. Feed according to what your eye tells you. It usually isn't hard to tell if your dog or pup is gaining or losing, and once mature you should be able to observe whether the dog is chubby or lean. A nice covering of the ribs is good, but you should be able to easily feel them! Slightly underweight is healthier than overweight, and especially puppies should not be fat.

  • Mine were always on adult food from the get-go. At first I ground the kibble to almost a powder, then let them eat it more and more coarse until they could cope with it exactly as it came out of the sack. I'd make sure it was softened a bit (with water) and saw to it that there was always fresh water available to the pups.

Puppies were sent to their forever homes with enough for the first week or so in order that the new owners could gradually wean them over to a food of their own choice.

  • Thank you all for the comments about food. We have tried broccoli and cottage cheese but does not seem to enjoy it. We will try other veggies to set if he likes those.

  • @lory-h - Don't give up on veggies just because they didn't like it the first time.... and try yogurt also

Try everything. My girl did not like raw carrots but loves them when cooked. She used to like raw green beans/ now she likes them cooked. She adores frozen green peas, cooked yam, bananas, mango, yogurt, and cooked broccoli. Keep trying.

I have yet to find a vegetable mine will NOT eat / steal. Green beans - it's like feeding a nest of sparrows as they all stand on hind legs and you drop green 'worms' into eager mouths.

Keepurr will even leave his arm chair last thing at night to the magic word 'cabbage.' I have learned over the years always to cook more veggies than the family will eat in order to have some over for the Basenji pack.

You'll find something - cooked or raw - it all the same to mine.

  • @zande Agree...Mine too Zande... they love all veggies... for sure root veggies...

  • There is a lot of research and I am too tired to care. Basically, they don't digest fruits and veggies raw much unless you grind them up. Since I feed them as treats and snacks, I don't care. Mine eat everything from lettuce to carrots, cabbage, green beans.. cooked and raw.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. We have started giving peas and carrots with his dinner and he seems to enjoy them. We will start adding more as time goes on.just experiment just like we do with kids.

For those who have asked if I am keeping a puppy, the final answer is no. The reason, you might ask?…. In 2000 I placed a puppy bitch with a great home.. we showed her to her Dual Championship and Ann (Mom) showed/trained her to her Obedience and Rally titles.. it is a home to die for.... A week and 1/2 ago, we lost Crystal to unexpected kidney failure. Mom, Ann made the hard decision that life was not good for her and let her go over the Rainbow Bridge. Ann still has Kobey that we co-own and he has been really missing his older house sister, so I offered Ann my pick puppy. She has decided to accept and take her home. I could not be more pleased.... as Ann and her family are my family and the best of friends. As you all know, I have two bitches that get along like bread and butter or as another friend put it, Peas and Carrots! While I was set to keep a puppy, I did worry that 3 is a crowd and I do not and do not want to have "packs"... we all live together... as a family... so my fear in keeping a puppy was that I would break up the bond between C-Me and Franie... now that problem doesn't exist. We will visit with or Ann will come up her every weekend.. and hopefully they will all continue to bond and be friends and the boy dog, Kobey too, but I don't have much fear about the boy dog... (not always the case with Mom's and bitches when they are not in the same house).... So all the homes have been decided... the exact placement of the pups will be decided tomorrow after we grade the litter, but I am pretty sure who is going where.... will soon announce on the my website who is going where!

@Patty: Interesting that you had a problem with loose stools, Pat, because I had exactly the same but with a puppy who was eventually discovered to have Giardia. It did take us a very long time though and in the meantime the pup was suffering. It also happened to a friend of mine herself who for years had a stomach problem that finally was discovered to be a Giardia infection. Because of my experience with the puppy, I had jokingly suggested the problem to her as well. Yes… Giardia "hides" very well..... Many Vets will write it off to a sensitive digestive system when in fact it is not. Like I said with my OJ, once it was cleared up, he could eat anything...

I would highly recommend the fish oil. As I stated before in a previous post, I put Zak on a grain free diet and added fish oil pills daily and a Cosequin DS (glucosamine & chondroitin) capsule sprinkled on his food each day for arthritis and he has not had a problem with arthritis since. There are foods with these supplements included, however, it is my understanding that they are just sprayed on the food. My vet had in the past suggested for my senior dogs at least 1000mg fish oil daily for cognitive health and the arthritis. For Zak and some early kidney disease he is showing she is recommending, and I have also read on line, 100mg fish oil per 10 lbs. of body weight (2500 mg daily). I don't think you're going to find the best level of fish oil supplement in a kibble. Oh, and his coat this year is sooooooooo soft! :)

@sharronhurlbut: I am a big supporter of the local humane society. They have found even when they offer $$ to have the folks bring back puppies/kittens to have them fixed, most don't do it. The only way they can prevent more dogs/cats in getting the animal fixed before it leaves the shelter. I a perfect world, this wouldn't be needed…but as lots of folks are not going to be bothered to have the surgerys done, this is the only way they can be sure... I am speaking of a all breed humane society. I do see their point... :D great minds think alike. I think we posted these two messages {about people not taking advantage of the reduced/free surgery} w/in seconds of one another. {we share the same local Humane Society}. I agree; I see their point completely.

Yeah, Jack is like that with broccoli- when he sees me pulling it out of the fridge to cook for me, he gets all excited and trembly with anticipation. He immediately sits and watches until he just can't stand it anymore and then he's HANGING TEN COUNTER SURFING!!!!!!
