Basenji service and Therapy dogs

Basenji Talk
  • Hey everyone! I'm new here! I have a basenji female, fixed named Cleopatra. We got her when my first service dog, a rescued Akita named Sachiko, passed away. The Service job was passed down to Cleo and she was retired after our car accident but has been recently been pulled out of retirement and being retrained because my problems have been getting bad again. She's wonderful and now I use a K9 sportsack to keep her closer and so people won't trip on her.
Are there any other Basenji service dog people here? Therapy or ESD? I would love to chat. !

  • I know we have at least one person here but I'll let them speak up. How old is Cleo? I am sorry about your accident and that you are having more problems.

  • Hi

My Diva is a service dog and has been for 5 years now. She is very good at what she does and is my lifeline. I have trained her in a unique way because of her size. She blocks by jumping on me to put distance between a person that comes into my personal space. She also wakes me up from night terrors by climbing onto my chest. I'm in good paws with my faithful Diva by my side.
I'm also in the process of training my full African as an alternate,he is 3/4 of the way in his training.

  • In our county your dog has to pass "good neighbor" training which my BJ failed. I have a registered service dog, but the BJ is far more attentive. In our state there is a growing trend to cut down on "internet certified" dogs, so I choose not to go that route.

  • Cleopatra is 7 years old now. Her job is to press against me to keep me grounded and get me out of dark areas with people. She'll start licking to help me when I start stimming and get shaky. If the depression is bad she comes and sits near me and cries. Some days I can go without her but others she stays near me and goes where I go.

@eeeefarm said in Is my dog a Basenji mix?: Genetics is such an interesting subject! And the most understandable book on the subject is Mary Lou Kenworthy's ! Recommended to everyone if it is still available.

First, thank you for the honest evaluation of your situation. Basenjis are dogs that consider who they live wit, to be part of their pack - family. They only chew or destroy things when they are bored, or mad at you. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!”) A young basenji, under say, 8 years, will do this when left alone for so long. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!) You write that you live with 3 roommates. You do not mention if this will change, so I will assume it will not. Personally, I think it is very unkind (to them AND the dog) of you to bring a basenji into this living arrangement. Unless ALL the roommates understand, and agree, to sharing their lives with a dog that will require so much of their time. The tiniest thing left on the floor could be destroyed, and could even harm the dog. Bathroom doors left open? A basenji might not be able to find anything as much fun, grab the toilet paper, and run. Fun, fun, fun!!! For the dog. You are researching enough to show that you are checking really well to see if a basenji will fit into your life. In my opinion, not just yet. Maybe later when your life has settled a bit. Oh, just remembered you mentioning you studying, the dog doing its thing. It might happen, but if the dog thinks your attention should be on him/her, you may not like that something. Best of luck in your studies, and with where ever your life leads you!

Wow Megan. I just looked @ my Basenji book again and it is INCORRECT. I did some research online and there ARE other breeds who have disconnected paw pads like a wolf. Thanx for the lesson!

In the video, I do see a lot of basenji traits, but who know... some mixes look like nothing they are really related to. Some basenjis, espec mixes, can be quite large.

I stayed in a neighbourhood with plenty of dogs. My Bs are anti dogs. They are prone to aggressive behaviour because they want to be the Queen Bitches. I thought they were just anti JRT and Big dogs. Now it seems they are anti everybody….sigh......
