United Airlines...and pets...

Off Topic
  • After several incidents, UA has become my "don't even think about them" airline. All airlines have some issues occasionally... but putting a puppy in an overhead baggage lock? The "per 10,000" is a more accurate way to look at it as obviously they carry the most pets. One would think more experience would lead to more expertise... but no.

El Al managed to drop Cara's crate 2 times and Moose's once. We were beyond livid and distressed over it. However, no one else had issues so I chalk it down to bad luck. Still, If I fly a pet with them again, I'm going to raise heck up front about the last time and video them loading and unloading.

  • The Australian laws stipulate that the animal has to be able to stand and turnaround without touching the container. They will not allow two to travel together, and you have to get a certificate signed by a vet that they are fit to make the journey within a day. There are a number of things to consider about flying, and when I shipped to USA they were put in the cargo and not let out for 16 hours during the flight - just as well. When I shipped to Hawaii, no rabies there, he held onto everything, and as soon as he was out of his crate at the other end, he had a gigantic piddle. And smiled.

@glenn-jalivay2 - Many use kibble and raw, usually what they do (myself included) is one meal would be kibble and one meal raw.... I agree with Redial about the age and taking a 6wk pup. In the US is is not legal in most all states to place pups less than 8wks. Basenjis in particular do much better at 10wks at least. They learn important lessons from littermates and other adults in the home from 6wks to 10wks. And I as a breeder do not feel they are mature enough to leave their littermates at 8wks. Always exceptions and that would be to an experienced Basenji home with an adult dog... as the adult will teach the pup way more that humans ever can.

wow! thanks for sharing, troubling isn't it? very good investigative work. Alleged or not, that camera video was spot on…. Too bad for the poor pets that have been through this or have died because of the lack of care in some airlines I will copy this link and pass it on!

I had not heard about the problem with Pet Airways. I hope the issue with it is actually a contract problem and not a financial one! The woman in the story who did not get her money back from Pet Airways should be getting her money back from her credit card company and then the credit card company deals with the company. Jennifer

Visits are a great idea. In the past year I have been staying at my familys farm wich has plenty of room but I added another dog and my Mother got another dog for a total of 4. Not bad since two are tiny ones, lol. But it took a bit to learn to b a good pack. I am not sure how cats mix with the dogs but I'm sure visits won't hurt any. Good Luck :)

When my middle son and wife come to visit - they bring their 2 labs. I let the labs be loose in the house and kennel my basenjis - can't imagine the basenji 500 with 2 huge labs in a small house. As folks get older though the dogs can be an issue so don't know how much longer I'll be able to let them come. This Thanksgiving - 2 labs and 2 mature ladies with walkers was interesting. However when we would go and visit my husbands family - could never bring dogs - they refused to have dogs in the house - ever. I agree with whoever said - their house their rules.

I love this! I'm just going to add one more to my version before using it–next to last item--I can legally spay/neuter them so they don't get (or get anyone) pregnant!!!
