Possible Basenji Mix?

Off Topic
  • We lost our sweet 15-year-old rat terrier this week and our hearts are broken, of course. He was such a perfect friend. We got him when he was 9 1/2 months old from a backyard breeder who claimed he was full rat terrier. I met his dad, and he was a small guy, definitely a rat terrier. I didn't meet his mom, but saw a photo and she looked much bigger and much more like a basenji. He loved to snuggle under blankets, was a little grumpy on waking, somewhat aloof, but very affectionate, groomed himself like a cat each night. We eventually want another dog, and would love another whatever he was. Do the experts here think he could have some basenji in him, or is he most likely full rat terrier? I'll post a few pictures.

  • Looks like a lot of basenji to me. BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport) is an excellent place to find one that needs rehoming. You could also contact the Basenji Club of America to find a breeder near you. Be aware that the new one won't be the same personality as the one you lost (how many times I've heard "well our old one was so ... why isn't this one the same"). Also read up on both breeds (rat terrier and basenji) to see if their characteristics really match what kind of companion you want.

  • Looks very basenji to me! I am sorry for your loss. :(
You might contact CampBasenji or Brat for a rescue when you are ready.

  • Thank you, Debra. He was such a wonderful guy and I'm so grateful I had so much time with him.

  • Your baby looks exactly like my "Harry" who I had to put down this past Monday. He had all characteristics of a Basenji, tho I am pretty sure he was a rat terrier/basenji mix. (I wrote about him a few years back on this link:
    https://basenjiforums.com/topic/15001/more-tales-about-harry-the-autistic-basenji-mix
We had him from about 8 weeks old until may 15th at 7:30 am.
What a crazy guy. Handsome as all get out. (I always told him that if there was such a magazine as "Handsome Dog magazine", he would be on every cover. I think the reason I am so heartbroken is that he was so hard to bond with and my wife and I took care of him almost like one takes care of an autistic child.
Well, I know this is 4 years late...but I am sorry for your loss and hope you found another like your beloved baby.
This is a pic of Harry after he lost over 20 lbs because of kidney disease.

@Shannanigan: I thought as much. (about the vet) I don't think Paco gets it…he can be very difficult to handle with food around, and Chris and I are VERY adamant about not giving him food anywhere else besides his food bowl or while training outside. He used to even nip at me while I was eating, so that we'd have to put him outside while we ate. Thus, I prefer my guests not feed him from off their plates and encourage it. :D I remember the problem you had with Paco and the pizza. We never feed Malaika off our plates and don't allow anyone else to do it either. She wouldn't need much encouragement to take food off our plates. We will treat Kwame the same. They do sometimes get left over treats but in their own dishes.

MacPack: Yes, I know bestiality isn't illegal here - how stupid, and they did mention that on the radio. Also, the whole gang probably would platonically marry Topper, he is such a dear. My Shaye would REALLY like to marry Topper.

What an interesting group of pictures. I don't get a good feeling when looking at these pictures - I get a feeling that the animals look as if they are being exploited. The dog at the bottom right does looks a little like a basenji or pharoah hound or a mix of the two.

People need to only read about rescue dogs and how they got to where they are to understand why we are so outspoken about breeding (or as the case may be, not breeding) Believe me it is not and easy decision when you are trying to do it right… it is costly and a labor of love... pure and simple... I bred my first litter only to find 2 days before the pups were born that my bitch's dam had Fanconi... can you image what I felt? Can you understand why we are so against anyone that bred this year without testing? I went forward with a different approach only to get temperaments that I didn't like... I made the hard choice and did not take that line forward other then to collect the males for possible use in the future if I then had a line with excellent temperaments that also prove to "throw" those temperaments... and it was not that they were nasty, but just a bit to strong for my taste... Understand that every breeder if you are a responsible breeder makes very, very hard choices... and the choice to NOT breed it the worst... and the most difficult... which is why we ask? What does your Basenji have to offer the breed?

There is a commonly used dog in TV and commercials that is either a Rat Terrier, or a corgi/terrier/basenji/chi mix….I have seen in on law and order, and some other more recent commercials...might be that one. Or it could be a real B...I haven't seen either of the ones mentioned.
