Meet Jax, our basenji mystery mix

Show Off Your Dog
  • I got my boy for valentine's day last year so he's just over a year now.
Im very curious what he's mixed with- his jaw and chest are so muscular. We were told that he was a Bernese Mountain Dog/German Shepherd mix when we got him. Lol CLEARLY he is not.

And one from when we got him

  • I must have done something wrong. ..
    Lemme try the pics again.

    And him acting like cat-dog

He's not very vocal, but we have two very vocal German shepherd dogs so when the leader gets going he'll bark with her but it sounds odd, sort of strained

  • Oh dear spirits. That baby picture... if I squint really hard I could see maybe a little. Are you sure someone didn't swap you puppy for a basenji mix? Bahahaha cause the next 2, the basenji comes out... including resting on their natural habitat... the kitchen table. It might be worth doing the wisdom dog panel just to find out what else is in there. How much does Jax weigh?

  • I'll have to double check his weight. I think he's about 30lbs. He ls very solid, but he's very light-footed.
I love his personality. The way his curled tail wags in happiness is hilarious too

  • I see Basenji in him! That 2nd pic...even though it's sideways, look at how he's sitting ~ he's got the Basenji sit! And in the perfect place (as far as he's concerned). Jax ole' boy ~ you got lucky with your humans & of course, the humans got lucky with Jax! Like his name too! He looks like a whole lotta' love & cuteness!

  • Thank you!
So the way he likes to get on chairs and tables is a basenji thing? And the princely sit- he always looks so regal- that's a basenji thing?
Makes me wonder if his beautiful show-dog-walk is a basenji thing too.

Someone here posted a picture of their dog on the kitchen table with the title "The Basenji In Its Natural Habitat"

Yeah, they like getting on things.

@Nancy-Berry Click the picture and it opens in an upright position

  • @synchro246 I love the way a Basenji sits! They kind of leave one leg cocked out to the outer side. Sometimes, they kind of roll their bottom so they're sitting on their tail & have both legs stretched out in front of them, sort of like a human sits!! Yes ~ lol ~ it's so funny the first time you see it, you'll let out a good belly laugh & your b will look at you like "What? Haven't you ever seen a b sit & relax before?" Some lay upside down with their head hanging off the sofa! They do love to surprise you with more antics than you'd think is capable of a "dog"... but, a Basenji isn't your run of the mill, average dog! They don't think they're dogs & a lot of them like to sit up in high places, like the back of the sofa!

  • @DebraDownSouth Thanks for the "click on the pic" trick! It works great & it's sure easier on your neck!!

  • Lol that's funny!
Jax lays like you describe all the time.
And I notice if he doesn't sit with a leg cocked to one side his little bum doesn't touch the ground; something I also find adorable.
I had no idea. I look forward to reading more about basenji "dogs" lol

  • @synchro246 I also love to watch them trot into the house....they remind me of a thoroughbred horse! They are just the best entertainers ever!!

  • @Nancy-Berry that is so funny I often described him as a horse and his smooth trot reminds me of a Tennessee Walking Horse

I don’t think you are, dang it and I want ALL the dogs to be Basenji! Still… great looking pup. Get a DNA test. If that pup has ANY Basenji in it, I’ll send you a beer. 👊😁👍

We also have a possible Basenji/Terrier (Yorkie) mix. I've had some doubts, but seeing this picture of Rosie, I can't help but see my Rebel. Such a great looking dog, and if she's anything like our girl, you're in for a treat!

I think I see some of the basenji ears, especially in the second picture. I just want to grab them and rub them good! :) It's most likely that there is at least a black lab there too. Also it may be not the first "mix". If it is a generation over there may be more then one mix in there. But either way, Lilly is adorable! :):) It's awesome that she has a good forever home now.

The traits you described are also found in most of the Nordic/spitz type dogs. I don't see anything overly basenji-ish about him in the pics. What ever he is, he's very hansome.

Rafismom, we started him out in a crate, but he hated it. Cried something fierce. We then started leaving him in my son's room, and he was absolutely fine….well, until he started crying again. Then we gave him roam of the house while we were gone, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I know. I'm lucky! He absolutely hates for us to leave, but he's good while we are gone. No complaints here, for sure. Maybe it's the possible black lab that mixed in that makes him so calm? He has his moments, especially outside when he sees a squirrel, etc., but overall he's a very calm pooch. Just last week, I was walking the dog at a local park when I hear a woman saying something about the dog. She was a good distance away. I then realize she was talking to me and asked if my dog was friendly. I said, "yes" and she came over to pet him. She told me that the dog reminded her of her first dog. She said her first dog was a basenji. After more chatting, she said that it was actually a basenji mix, but that my dog looked a lot like hers. She told me how much she loved that dog and told me all sorts of stories about her. Such a nice lady. Gave me a few bits of advice and about a half hour later we parted ways. This is my first dog, and I've been amazed at how friendly other dog people are when I'm walking him. This has been a great experience.
