Help!! Constant whining & can't figure out what he wants!

    If this is a new behaviour (and it sounds like it is) I would be wondering if he is in some discomfort, and yes, definitely explore whether there is something going on with him physically. Have you gone over him thoroughly to assess whether there are any "ouchy" areas on his body? I concur with Debra about getting a blood panel to look for some hidden complaint.

    @toeloop840 Keep in mind this is Basenji breeding season... doesn't matter if neutered or not... these boys know. My old boy would whine for the entire month of October.....

    @tanza Yes, we are starting to think that's what it is. The rest of his family went through it in October but for some reason he seems to be a bit delayed. Any tips for how to stop or reduce the whining? It is driving us crazy especially when we try to work from home!!

    Bahahahaha, when I had a bitch in heat here, my male Rottweiler cried almost nonstop. He'd doze off and then right back to it. I tried vicks under his nose, everything. If that's it, I can only send you my utmost sympathy and at least the comfort that if that's it.. it's seasonal, not his health.

    @toeloop840 Is Watson neutered?? If not, I'd make some plans on getting that taken care of ~ pretty soon!! I'd bet there's a female in season somewhere with-in a mile or so! I had a friend who hoped to get her female Dobie bred one day. As I walked out the back door one evening, there were about 6 or 7 male dogs of all varieties out there! They weren't afraid of me either ~ I thought they were going to rip my leg off before I got to the car!! I called the Vet the next day & they said to come in & pick up some pills for the female. I'll try to spell this, Chloraphyll ... it makes the smell of a female in season, not "smellable" & about 3 days later....the male dogs were all gone & peace was restored! Watson might still give a whine or 2 when a female comes into season but he sure won't pine his heart out & your ear drums! :)

    @tanza LOL! I just made a post about getting him fixed to cut down on his whines! I forgot that even though Basenjis are sight hounds, they're also scent hounds!!! Yep ~ maybe if you whine with him a bit, he'll give it up for awhile!! :=D Just kidding unless you can out-whine him or make him think that he sounds almost as bad as you could sound!!

    @Nancy-Berry While I agree that if not being used at Stud, should be neutered, BUT that will not many times fix the problem...some of my males intact or NOT would show this behavior....

    @tanza I am sure sorry Tanza, I did not aim to insult you or hurt your feelings in any way! Honestly, the fact is, it has been many, many years since I've been around any male dogs. I do remember now that, like you said, "...fixed or not, the boys do smell the females ..." I had to think a long ways back & yes! I now remember the boys just would NOT shut up! It was enough to drive a person "bonkers"! And a little whining would go a very long ways. I am sincerely apologizing for my mistake! Please, forgive me! I will not let it happen again! Thank You, Nancy B.

    Yes. Having, or not having, dew claws is definitely not indicative of a good or bad breeder, or of the quality of the dog.
    I have had 2 different rescue Basenjis without dew claws who originated from "show" breeders; and I currently have a Basenji that I am showing who HAS dew claws. I would certainly hope that any judge would not base any decisions on whether or not a dog has dew claws.

    The only problem with leaving dew claws on a Basenji is that it increases the odds of their ability to use power tools!

    I got a big 'good' and 'unpredictable' surprise this morning: Binti was chased from view by a german shepherd and didn't come back. Usually they will walk around until we find each other again. This time she went all the way back to the car park, where she sat down next to our car, whining and moaning. I had no idea she knows which car is ours…

    @khanis: Um yeah.. not. You should NOT give her the freedom to display her dominance. There should be only ONE alpha in your house and that is YOU. All those dogs should get along. I am sorry if I was confusing in my original post as the above post obviously indicates that I was. I agree with the above post in that you should be the only one alpha in your house. You should have control over the dominance displays and any other behaviors of all members of your pack. However, between pack members displays also occur and you have the final say over what is tolerable and what is not. Your b should never be allowed to display dominance over you or other humans in the household however even the behavior where adults growl/bark etc at pups to correct them is a dominance behavior - just not dominant over you. I hope that clears up what I was saying. If not, please ask again.

    About the JR type - Duke is probably Basenji-Jack Russell. I'm tellin' ya - I thought he was the craziest puppy on earth! He was about 12 weeks old and didn't know what he was. But thought it would be my advantage to train him young. Darn if all my efforts went down the drain with him. This was not a typical domesticated dog - at all. (More like a devil dog from hell.) But he was mine and thought he was better off with me than anywhere else, 'cause he was going to be trained one way or another with love. Today - he is well trained, but like was mentioned, he typically will respond to commands with the attitude of what it's worth to him. He's now almost 2 1/2 years old - sometimes obedient…sometimes rebelious and way happier since we added Daisy to the family. direy01 - kudos to you for loving Joey. I know the training is hard work - and exhausting - but your perseverence and repitition will be returned with pride and joy.

    Another thought on the poop thing…the 100% guaranteed way to get Ruby to poop is to give her exercise. Also, Ruby only goes once a day (in the morning) unless something really excites her (like deer running across the road in front of her or a dog chasing her when we do an evening walk). We have a routine in the morning...first thing after I get up, I take her out...say "Potty Ru", she runs off the step and starts to sniff, I say "potty" a couple more times and she goes. (oh and while she's going, I say "good potty" a few times and follow up with a treat once finished). We have a daylight basement that extends off the porch so there is an overhang that she goes under and will potty no matter how hard it is pouring (takes longer in the rain or when it is windy because of all the noise). After the potty, then I run her on the bike or walk her (walks happen in light to moderate rain) - usually 1 - 2 miles. If I walk her, she sometimes poops on the walk (usually in one spot by a duck pond which is just about the halfway point of the walk). If I run her on the bike, as soon as we are back to the yard, we go in her dog pen, I say "poop Ru" and she starts doing the crazy run/circle thing and poops (again, I say "good poop" while she's going and give a treat to her when finished). I bet if you walked her first and then tried to get her to poop, you might have more success as she will have checked for messages from other dogs :D on her walk and gotten all the new scents from those.

    That is exactly what Crystal is doing with Kobey… while she has been thrilled to have him... he loves to steal what she has...
