Third eye lid

  • My 12 year old female has her third eyelid visable over the bottom third of her right eye. Just started. Any idea why? Any idea on home treatment? She doesn't seem bothered but it looks weird. Hope it goes away.

  • It is commonly called Cherry eye. Nothing at home is going to help. They can try steroid drops, but generally surgery to tack it in is needed. You don't want to risk it becoming infected or injured. Having personally seen surgery done wrong, I strongly suggest you find a vet who is experienced in the practice.

  • If it's cherry eye, you can actually gently push it back in place by using your thumb. Not by touching the eye or the red part, but by massaging gently below the eye. This should get it back in place. If it keeps returning quickly, then yes, surgery is the only way to go. But some dogs only get it a few times their whole lives, and some get it a couple of times a year. Then it's better to avoid surgery, especially on an old dog.

  • Thank you for your help. I took her to the vet. They prescribed eye drops to see if it would help. They stained her eye. No scatches. They eye is slightly recessed. I will try the massage as you suggest. I really don't want her to have surgery. But I don't want her to be in pain either. Hoping the massage helps. Thank you.

Nice to hear some good news on the forum for someone, such a shame sometimes even the simple things take time to sort out, glad your eye problems are solved to the point of being a possible allergy to something rather then being something more serious, in saying that allergies are a pain in the butt. Yay for Becca and Tucker. jolanda and Kaiser

Pat, yeah, it was many but the specialist from GA (who does CERF btw, or did, could be retired at this point) said all were iris to iris and none should cause her issues. But you can still see them. I am comforted to know that a lot of strands don't pass as I honestly don't remember seeing that limitation, only on placement. Been a long time since I looked at CERF. But the issue was and then, the person LIED. She sent me a puppy for my child, who already had more on her than any child should with my health issues, that she obviously had no clue about– a puppy she had no clue about it's eye health. And then wanted her back if I wasn't going to breed her as she would. Yeah, over my dead body.

If she's loosing hair then it sounds like it might be something more than just stress-of-an-intruder. The stray could have brought something nasty along. Maybe there's mites or something. I would take both to the vet.
