    Hello all…... the we finally got another red female girl this week.... 4 months old. Its been 6yrs since our last girl died... and the wife just
    couldn't handle another one until lately.. Anyway, I haven't had a puppy in about 50yrs.. so was curious since this dog does a lot
    of scratching herself.. and biting around the base of her tail... if a skin supplement is ok for puppies? She gets Blue Rocky Mountain recipe (w/red meat) for puppies now. I was assuming that should be good enough for her coat. No dandruff.... or even shedding...

    I don't want to load her up on supplements...... haven't given her a bath yet... and I'm sure that will go over well..(hah)...
    Figured I'd ask people who would know.....

    Generally if you are feeding high quality food (and blue buffalo is good), there isn't a need to add in more oils so I'd really not bother with linatone. A probiotic… yes, to help digest and use the food.

    I also rarely bathe a dog unless they smell or get into something awful (or were showing). Daily brushing/combing keeps their skin and coat good. Sadly I always found puppies needed more often, lol, since they tend to get yucky.

    You need to post pictures of the puppy! Where did you get her from?

    Fleas? Indication from scratching at the base of the tail could indicate Fleas? And I would bathe her to see if that helps, could be scabs (little ones) from littermates

    have you talked to the breeder?

    Pat.. you know I saw your post and thought HUH? Then reread and saw I TOTALLY missed the itching sentence. No, I'm not tired! :)

    Agree with Pat, could be fleas, could be other things. I'd flea comb the base and see if you find flea dirt, fleas, scabs etc. If the coat in general is good, and you find nothing combing and bathing doesn't help, rubbing a little anti-itch med into the base and distracting til it dries might help.

    Nope.... not in my opinion....not atypical. especially if these pups come for BYB or Millers.... That said, Giardia is not uncommon nor is a pup with a UTI.... In regards to Giardia, I wonder if these pups shown symptoms when still with the breeder?

    @dmey: Do you have pictures???? This is him about 3 weeks ago but he's only gained .5lb It seems I can't upload a picture right now, will try again later today.

    how big is the lump? it could be as simple as a pore clogged with oil. it can feel like a cyst and by massaging it you can get it to head over time. Or try a warm wash cloth. Shot reactions, like they said, are on the shoulder blades. Caesar has a reaction to a shot and his shoulder blew up to a softball size. The vet tech that gave a shot didnt insert it in the correct manner and it dissolved with time and a Benadryl shot. Does your pup react when you touch it like it might hurt? What size is it? When Cairo was being neutered the vet pulled two teeth (canine and molar) that were not completely out or pushed out by the new teeth. They didnt charge me that much because he was already asleep. This is a great time for them to inspect and fix anything. They charged me $50 for pulling a baby canine that didnt come out and a molar that was on its way out.

    diahrea is a common sign. My guys both received oral dewormer meds as a standard Banfield Vet procedure for their wellness plan. This is not uncommon. Caesar was always leash walked as a puppy and he still got it. Dont let your basenji eat grass or drink water off out of anything but your water bowl. I have found that the vaccines for Giardia have never worked for either of my basenjis. It is typical for my guys. I didnt catch it at first because I thought Caesar's diahrea was from the training treats. You are a great basenji mommy for bringing yours in for testing!

    Try giving him a half teaspoon of plain yogurt daily for a few days. Yogurt has enzymes that help adjust the "gut" and usually helps stop gas and/or diareah. Always works for my animals. :)
