New Basenji mix owner?

Member Introductions
  • Hi Everyone,

I recently rescured this cute guy from a local animal shelter, he was listed as a Basenji. He is 1 year old and very smart, obedient, great with other dogs and kids. He does have a bark, but only very rarely.

Any thoughts on if he is a B mix or something else?

    Thanks!

  • Hi congratulations! It is similar to my Ricky, who is also 1 yr old, quiet and sweet (see my post). I am no expert in this matter, but I might guess my Ricky is mixed with lab, and yours seems to have a bit of pitbull?

  • Cute, but head is not a Basenji type… that said... when you have mixes, they can take on the "DNA" from either/or.... sire/dam... there was a litter years ago of a Beagle mix and a purebred Basenji... I think it was a litter of 6 or more.... 2 looked totally like a Basenji, two like a Beagle... one in fact looked totally like a German Shepard.... so with mixes, you never know unless someone really knows who the Mom/Dad are

Welcome aboard, but do share his registered name ? Who are Dad and Mom and what was his date of birth so we can be sure to add him to the Basenji pedigree on-line database (with a photo ???) for the world to share him. http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/

@pennypen: We are attending our first event on Friday, Nov 26th in Decatur, TX and am excited to see her run her first practice run and see if she will be able to do a qualifying run. Super geeked! So i hope to meet more basenji owners in the area since every time i do see another i get so excited and Penny just goes nuts over fellow basenjis. I want to go to some lure coursing as well. I live in Austin with a rescue girl that I got from BRAT. :) Welcome to the forums.

Welcome Wes and Anne, i'm sure you will love this forum. You are right Basenjis are certainly a challenge but definately worth it. Perhaps the other bit of her will make her a bit easier to train?

@annyaa: um not that I know of, what is it exactly. And I will contact the breeder tonight and ask her. Please go to www.basenjihealth.org This is very, very important, especially if you have been following the thread of Isis that was just sent over the rainbow bridge from Fanconi… please seach the boards about Fanconi and testing

Sean, as a new member of the Forum but an old doggy daddy I have had a lot of experience with many breeds. Reading about your requirements for a dog I have to suggest that you consider getting a rescue greyhound, it will be a great companion for when you run and the rest of the time they are very laidback. Basenji's are very intelligent and require a good deal of intellectual stimulation, otherwise they get bored and a bored B is a mischievious B.
