• Oh my, you are getting a taste of a 'real' basenji! But she is sooo adorable. Nicky ate 3 pairs of my glasses at about age 12, so she may not outgrow her taste for plastic.
We are talking about a trip to Fleet Peoples, will let you know when/if we all do a road trip. Any weekends you are not available to meet us?

She is adorable and knows it too! And a huge cuddler, to make up for her naughtiness. Please let me know if you come over to Fleet Peeples. Our weekends are pretty much always free so it shouldn't be a problem to meet up there regardless of when you decide to come over. I imagine all the B's would have a fantastic time in the woods hunting squirrels!

Lol…Ava certainly doesn't sound picky, Kaia's got nothing on her!

She's doing well, would be a handful if we didn't have Loki, most of her bratty teenager pranks are focused on him. She's picked up the habit of giving a light smack to the face when one of us gets home or she wakes up in the morning, so keeping your face away from her for the first few minutes has become a must. And she mistakenly thinks she's a goat...she will eat anything! How is little miss wild child doing?

I'm always glad to catch up with beautiful Miss Kaia and hear she's doing well! Wonder what started her smacking people? Ava is a like a teenage goat, too, and I'm constantly picking things out of her rebellious little mouth– if I can catch her to get them! She loves to eat mulch... and grass... and dirt... and just about every plant she can find. She has even adopted one of those sullen teenage expressions that human kids have... when she's not ignoring me completely.

Did you have Kaia spayed or are you waiting till later in the summer?

  • LOL, Carly has turned into a little digging machine in the yard…. little holes every where in the lawn! None of mine have ever been diggers, will have to blame that on Jasper (VBG).... At least she doesn't dig to try and get under the fences....

  • No spay yet, but will do it next month. What about you; has Ava gone in yet? Kaia does not discriminate on what she eats: mud, trees, paper, oil blotting sheets, and q-tips are a favorite.

tanza- both of mine dig. Loki loves to eat roots so that's the main reason he digs and I think Kaia just sort of learned from him. And it's always impossible to fill in the holes because he literally scatters the dirt a good 4-5 feet away from where the hole is. And since we're on the lake they've dug up a few huge snail shells from the muck…Kaia actually came in the house with 4 all black legs one day.

  • I feel for you guys about the digging. Luckily, Ava doesn't dig… except in my sheets. She's a very aggressive digger of bed linens. I made the mistake of buying a detergent with Febreeze and she became rabid about digging to release the scent. Bad idea. I quickly bought unscented, and now she digs harder, trying to find the scent.

Tad thought it would be better for Ava to wait until July or even August for the spay. I'm holding out as long as I can. She had started urine marking in the house, but that has tapered off, thank goodness! Ava clearly thinks I need to redecorate-- replace carpet, do some painting, buy new rugs, get rid of some books...

That's the worst sometimes. I have to start locking Kananga out of the bedroom when I go to shower. Every time I shut the bathroom door, I hear him starting to dig into the bedsheets, of course I know to wait and listen for him to do it and catch him in the act. He doesn't care, has a big smile on his face with the expression "Yea? What are you going to do about it?". So now it's off-limits for him when he's not being supervised.

  • Luckily mine don't dig the bed unless they want to make it extra comfy or Loki is under some blankets and Kaia wants to pester him so she "digs him out". Otherwise they are good now with the bed, Loki even knows to get off and wait when we're changing the bed sheets!

Tad said the same thing about the July/August spay. Kaia hasn't done any urine marking and since she's always been so petite I was relieved when he said we should be fine waiting until July. I'm going to have to figure out a way to keep her from overdoing it and prevent Loki from licking or chewing at her stitches…I do have tea tree oil on hand so that should help.

  • Oh i was thinking i was the only one with ripped bed sheets! i dont care to replace.. i wait until they are totally off.. in fact i have left one to put over my new bedsheets so can take the damage first.

But sure! they get boring of that bed sheet so pass to the new ones.. lol

I was relieved, too. I had an appt already made and was glad to cancel it. But Ava is urine marking again. Yesterday, she marked me! She is also licking like crazy. I'm concerned about her growth plates, but they should be almost closed, if they're not already. I bought some tea tree oil, too, and will hold out as long as I can!

Is Kaia still a petite girl?

  • Are you sure that she (Ava) doesn't have a UTI or a little Vaginitis going on? The licking on a puppy is usually a give away… IMO

  • She's had two UTIs and has gone through three rounds of antibiotics over the past few months. Urinalysis came back clear last week. Not sure why she's having so many issues with that.

It can happen with puppies…. and Urinalysis doesn't always show an infection. And I would still wonder about Vaginitis as it is more common in dogs under one year.

She has had a little eye discharge, which the vet said was probably allergies. Does Vaginitis not show up in a urinalysis/culture? Is the treatment usually diet and supplements?

Sorry, TMartin… but maybe this applies to Kaia, too!

  • No problems, lets me learn for future reference which is always a good thing 🙂

Kaia is still petite. I haven't weighed her in about 2 weeks or so, she had been hovering just a smidge under 18 lbs, she may have finally gone over that now. That's why I was hoping to put off until July, wanted to make sure she had plenty of time to grow because we weren't too sure if she grows slowly or if she'll just stay petite. But I look back on her first pictures with us and wonder when she got so big!
