Looking for good breeder in OK/KS/TX general area

  • I have been searching, emailing, texting and calling breeders for months now with no luck.
The only responders with pups are the BYB folks… two in Houston area alone!

    I feel so defeated! :(

I am told I am on a waiting list for Meisterhaus and a maybe for one of Dyan Bauhman's pups but it seems like that will be a no since she only had 3 and people ahead of me. Any suggestions on GOOD breeders that do have pups within a day's drive of Oklahoma City? (Or willing to ship if need-be)

Our ideal situation is a brother-sister pair but two separate families is okay. No breeding or conformation showing, but possible agility-type showing in the future. Hubby wants a brindle male and I want a red female.

  • All of my pups are from Linda Ehlers of Jerlin basenjis, but i don't know if she bred anything this year. She's in MO, not too far from Kansas City.
Otherwise, have you tried the BCOA webpage?

  • Maybe Tad or Dyann can give you a recommendation for someone else. Many breeders will travel to the Indianapolis show in a couple weeks and Louisville next month, so you could probably get a puppy transferred there from an Ohio breeder. Try Kyle Cabrell or Sue Kite as they would be at both those shows. Unfortunately a lot of people I know bred , but it did not take this yr. I will have two Meisterhaua litters next yr if you want to wait. I'm sure Tad would get you on the waiting list for next yr. I would love to have some of my pups do agility.

  • Thanks Lisa.
I think we end up having to wait until next year, but start getting our name on lists now. :)
My husband has his heart set on a brindle male and I know they are harder to come by.

  • Sue Kite has a pet black puppy, I think still available (Klassic Basenjis). I will also just put this out there, littermates do not always make the best placements… not always a fact, but pretty much a rule of thumb. Keep in mind that littermates have been competing with each other since before birth.... so there is usually always some aggression there. So you really have to make sure of the temperaments before hand.

  • Robyn Dubbert (Sherwood basenjis) in Atlanta has 2 litters, not sure if all are spoken for. I think they are 6 or 7 weeks old now. A little further to drive thatn you want, though.

  • Thanks Mac. I messaged Sherwood a few days ago but haven't heard anything back yet. Keeping hopes up.

  • You might want to call her along with email…. but she doesn't have any Brindles, that I do know

  • Have you checked breeders on the BCOA-Basenji Club of America website?

I agree with Lisa… while your list can be helpful, puppymillers have learned to look very reputable making it much harder to look at the website to determine. The bottom line is, no matter if they sell one breed or more, they can be a puppymill. And there are certainly some very legit responsible breeders with 2 or even 4 breeds! My entry into dog breeding/showing was a woman who had English bulldogs, her daughter had aghans and setters. If they don't have pedigrees and health testing info on the web page, I'd run. If they have it and you check OFA and find they falsified, or only maybe the current or some of their dogs have testing.. run. The rest they can fake or pretend but generations of health clearances generally aren't part of a puppymill.

@debbi: For the record, BRAT does not do Fanconi marker testing because we can not afford it. If we tested each basenji that came into rescue each year, it would cost over $30,000 per year. Our adoption fees do not begin to cover our direct vetting expenses as it is. This is the primary reason BRAT does not test. In addition, the test is not 100% accurate. debbi j. @debbi: I don't see this as BRAT bashing. I am involved in the making of BRAT policy, and I know that is not the main reason. You may have heard this from individual BRAT members, but the opinion of individual members does not stand for the organization. debbi j. So are you saying BRAT doesn't do it because of finances but would let it be done if funds? Or are you saying it doesn't do it because of finances but also wouldn't allow it even if they had funds due to the "labeling." I don't care if it is a MAIN reason, I care if BRAT would prohibit a rescuer testing dogs they foster or if people raised money to help BRAT test rescues.

Congrats on picking a breeder and getting on the future puppy list…hope you are successful in getting a pup! :D How exciting! Oh, and regarding the sleeping - I truly think the secret weapon for sleep, besides wearing my pup out before bed, was the snugglepuppy that Lisa (lvoss) recommended. Definitely get one of those! Liyah had no problems sleeping - I only remember her crying the first 2 nights and then only for 15 or 20 minutes, otherwise, I've always had my full night sleep. So sleepwise, for me a puppy was easy, as was potty training.

@lvoss: I thought this was a well written article on choosing a breeder. http://www.dogboston.com/askjo/askjobreeder.htm Yes it is, covers all the things that have been pointed out on how, why to go to and find a responsible breeder. Also the questions listed on the Basenji club of America Web site are great for interviewing a breeder
