  • Hello! My name is Sebaztian, I live in San Francisco and I'm picking up a basenji puppy from Bushbaby Basenjis in Livermore in a couple of months! The litter will be either red or brindle and the breeder has suggested a boy for me. They should be about 10-12 weeks by the time I get them, but I am completely new to this so I am really excited to raise a pup from the very beginning. Any tips or advice you guys can provide would be very much appreciated :) I am reading through a couple of the intro threads and trying to get an idea on how to prepare my home and life for my new little companion :)

Looking forward to sharing stories and pictures with you all! :D

  • Hello, welcome and congrats on your new puppy! There will be lots of advice– and new puppies-- on here, so I hope you stick around!

  • Hi Sebaztian,
Terri's litter was born yesterday. All Brindles…. 3 girls, 2 boys..... Glad to see you hear!!!

  • Congrats on the new puppy! How exciting to be getting a new puppy! They are not like other dogs, lol, so be prepared!

  • He is doing everything the right way!…. Did his homework, visited with Tanza at our Specialty show, however we didn't have a puppy for him due to the prior reservations... referred him to Terri, so it worked out well!

  • Congratz, Sebaztian! They grow quickly, so be prepared to be like "Wow!" Let us know what you name him and show us pics once you get them!

  • Thanks for the welcome, guys! I'm really excited, need to start getting the house puppy-proofed!

No way, Pat! Thank you for letting me know!!! I'm sure Terri has been super busy taking care of all the newborns and everything, but I'm really happy to know they've arrived! Can't wait to see them all! :) :) :)

@DebraDownSouth: I am so happy to sign in and see you post! Especially with the wonderful pictures and videos. Both of our first basenjis do that to your HAIR when it's wet. I am going to try a wash cloth and see! I am glad your husband is doing better. Well hello Debra! It made me smile to see your post - I always enjoyed your comments, whether popular or not, because they were YOUR honest comments. :) I'm a huge fan of honesty. We are all doing quite well here - still in the Vancouver, BC Canada suburbs. Kipawa is thriving, and he is a big part of our lives. Yes, you should do a video of your basenjis going wild with a wash cloth. My hair is longer and thick, so I think I have to keep Kipawa out of it when it's wet. ;) As every year goes by it seems I lose a major chunk of my memory. Are you still in the 'south'? Was it Georgia? And your basenjis' names - forgive me, I can't remember them. Boy do I love getting older, NOT!

I agree!! You could tell she was bored with the whole thing and that was when she got all defiant!!! How do they keep them from not getting distracted when they do the classes at say Petco? We are going in Feb. and I am a little concerned about it.

@Quercus: some of mine make a sound kind of like "hrumphf" if they want something…some will moan, and whine. Our male just gives us the mind meld stare.... OMG! The "mind meld stare"…that's a perfect way to describe it! Mine does the "hrumphf" thing too. Sometimes it sounds like a sneeze, because if you're near it, you get snotted.

Swims, but doesn't like the rain? That's odd. Why do you think that is?

I am a huge "Bryan Gregory Fan" also, LOL He is is very particular about the dogs he will breed. He does great at follow-up once you get your puppy home, too; is always available to give advice, answer questions, etc. {And Lord knows he is patient with first time Basenji owners, very patient, …<grin> I love to watch Jazzy when she sees him at shows. She loves him! I'm hoping he sticks around for a few more years -- have to give me time to convince my husband that "we" want another Basenji after my older mixed breed dog dies. LOL {Poor man, thinks Jazzy is my last dog.} And if I get another one, I'd like it to be a Jumoke pup.</grin>
