Looking for a Basenji

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hi there,

I am looking for a basenji dog. Before I purchase one, I would like to meet one in person to make sure allergies are not an issue.

Is anyone available in the Saskatchewan area for a meet and greet? The last thing I'd want to do is take one home only to have issues down the road.

    Thanks!!

  • Let me ask. Why do you want a Basenji? Do you have allergies to dogs? Basenjis are not hypoallergenic. You should read the forum subjects to learn about the breed's traits, behaviors, heath issues, etc. A breeder or rescue organization isn't going to just let you take one home. You'll need to make visits, have interviews and fill out papers. A reputable breeder and Basenji Rescue will require you to return the Basenji if you cannot keep it. They will also provide help with issues as well. So yes, a good start would be to meet someone in your area that has one and you can talk to them and see the dog.

  • If it helps any, I've never classified myself nor been diagnosed with animal allergies but cats have always made me itchy, never had issues with dogs although I grew up with "hypoallergenic peekapoos"…Oakley has a very short fine coat yet he shed a fair amount and there are times he makes me a little itchy, I'm constantly washing my sheets and when he goes through his yearly shed I tend to get a little uncomfortable. I only say this because I didn't expect to have any issues and they are mild but I did notice sensitivity. After owning Oakley I wouldn't classify them as allergy friendly...

  • Please do not believe the BYBs ads that Bs are hypoallergenic or that they do not shed! They do blow/shed coat usually in Spring.

  • And be advised that just because one individual basenji doesn't make you itch that does not mean they all won't. If it's been more than a 2 weeks since Digital the brindlewonderkid has had a bath, my skin breaks out and is itch if I hold him. The other two don't. Digital have a very hard coat, the others have softer coats, but you would not necessarily know that if you take home a puppy. None of my basenjis shed very much, but they do shed some. (Hardly any compared to a lab or GSD or beagle)

  • I will ask around to see if anyone not on this list is in SK

    Thanks! That would be awesome!

  • I did find a lady for you, unfortunately, Luther is sick and has taken a turn for the worse recently, so that meeting was cancelled even before I could tell you. I haven't found anyone else remotely close. Sorry!!!

  • I hope you find your ideal Basenji but always make sure you 'meet and greet as you designate it'. I appreciate that you may have to travel to a breeder or even to an owner who is available to have you around for a while and answer any questions you have. You can learn a great deal from this forum too.

  • Just funny how different people read things. I am wondering if you meant you having allergies from the Basenji or if the Basenji is prone to allergies when in different environments… just a thought. It is my mindset because my B was brought from Tenn to Fl, and is on Benedryl when needed and my first B never had any 'runny nose or eyes' because he was born in Fl.

Thanks very much! We greatly appreciate your help. Let us know if you hear of any other Saskatchewan Basenjis for us to meet!

Email me privately. Address in signature block websites. But this is not a year to be thinking about Basenji puppies. And lists for next year are being compiled by some breeders.

All pups have been placed as responsible breeders have reservation lists. We are not at this time planning a litter for 2020 or 2021. I would be happy to talk to you about Basenjis. You can search for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org by state, however as far as I know all responsible breeders on the West Coast already have full reservation lists. You would be looking at litters possible in 2021. This is the time to connect with a responsible breeder and get on their reservation lists for 2021. And if you are looking for a dog that is hypoallergenic, Basenjis do shed and have dander so they are not really hypoallergenic. While they can do well with people with allergies, you need to spend time with them and more than one time. Be sure that you check out health testing yourself, regardless of what you might be advised. Tests for DNA testing is public knowledge at www.ofa.org. You need to have either a registration number or name to check this out for yourself to verify. I suggest all people looking for a Basenji, even my own, do this.

My gut feeling is if you can't find a dog who is utterly good with cats already, your best and safest bet is a puppy. I suggest you get on a couple of breeder's list and wait for the perfect pup for your house.

If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
