How Does Your B Potty When Raining?

Basenji Talk
  • Kipawa has no problem with the rain if he is at a dog park, it's raining, and he is playing with a friend. BUT the wet grass in the backyard becomes a very evil monster, so much so that he has to use a portion of the cement deck (grass level) to relieve himself. It's funny because if he's on wet grass on a walk, he'll use the grass just fine. Oh how complex and silly our basenjis can be. :D But that's why we love them!

  • Arwen goes out no matter what, potties fast and flies back in. Cara believes she will melt if the ground is wet, has stood crying for an HOUR hopping one foot then the next, refusing to go. She has taken to peeing and pooping on the porch. Better than in the house so if the ground is wet, I expect it.

  • My Dexi is 5 mos old and we live in ny..it seems to have been raining since we got her. She doesn't like rain or wet grass much and will run back inside to pee on the kitchen floor. So suffice it to say our housebreaking is not going as well as I expected.. She even did this once or twice when it wasn't raining I guess she is confused now..

  • I have neighbors that on more than one occasion have asked if Oakley was hurt because he was whining, crying and screaming because it was raining or wet…I said "no, he's just a pansy"...I have I walk him to go to the bathroom but he has never just allowed me to take I'm out and go right across the street, but when the weather is wet I can get him to pee but pooping, is a slim chance. He's gettin better but I wish he would understand that of he went quickly we would both be much happier and dryer!! I will say I've had times where I'd walk Oakley 40 minutes bc he wouldn't poo but the minute we got inside...well you can guess!!

  • Does this mean they will never be fully housebroken? Please tell me it gets better!

  • It gets better with age…Oakley used to hold his bowels 99% of the time until we got home as a pup...he's 16 months now an it's only on rare occasion he will have an accident and it is always because I don't "stick it out" long enough in the rain... One thing I still tell myself is advice given on this forum " don't go in until they are done" and it's true. Since day 1 oak was stubborn about the bathroom- if the wind blows the wrong direction he feels entitled to tell me to shove it! But...not giving in and stayin out for an hour if need be really teaches them that mommy always wins- and they eventually get it but that doesn't mean they like it.

So my advice to you is not to come inside until business is done, especially since you know she just goes on the floor...and when she does har an accident take her out immediately. Consistency, consistency, consistency!! She will be housebroken, in the meantime take her out every three hours and work her schedule around bathroom breaks, right before she gets up in the am and before bed and feed her ten minutes before a schedule bathroom break

  • Thanks for the advice!

  • No problem….you have no idea how many times people must pass us in the rain watching me mutter in annoyance " not going in until you go!!"....I look like an idiot and I think that's why Oakley likes doing it to me...but nothing is more pleasing than standing there having a battle over whose more stubborn and finally he gives in with a squat and a look like "there, are you happy"?! I take my small victories where I can

  • Yes, Chealsie508, and I expect you both get extremely wet in the process!!? Been there, done that, got the T shirt!

  • Anubis loves my back yard because I have a large overhang that shelters from the rain/snow etc in the back yard. Its got a concrete porch and some portion of the grass is sheltered too lol. So hes safe from the evil wetness. At my old house he'd run out pee or poo as fast as he can and run back in. He walks while he poos so he was practically RUNNING while pooping just so he can get in and dry himself.

  • Voodoo also doesn't really mind the rain. Only when it's really pouring (the rain that get's you soaked in less then the minute) he will run from tree to tree, standing dry under the leaves and waiting for me to catch up to him (and I would swear he is having real fun, standing dry and watching me get wet…)
But with 'normal' rain, he acts just like any other (dry) walk.

  • I wish Oakley would understand that quick=dry

  • @Chealsie508:

I have neighbors that on more than one occasion have asked if Oakley was hurt because he was whining, crying and screaming because it was raining or wet…I said "no, he's just a pansy".

It is hard to explain that whine and cry to non-Basenji owners!!! Uzie will definitely let me know he wants back in the house if I am not in sight…!!

  • Yesterday afternoon around 6:30, I hustled Nicky, Eddie & Chipley into the car and drove them to the local park though still drizzling a bit. We had walked them earlier, and they went to the park at 8 am as well, so this was just a quick "get empty before the rain hits" trip. No one was there, they did appropriate business and were ready to go home when a nice black and white pit-bulldog mix came in. What a nice dog! He got Nicky, (yes, Nicky) playing and chasing him and Chipley as well. Another regular with a little black terrier type came, and later someone we know with another black and white pit mix. It was "tuxedo" day at the park, everyone black and white, and we were there till 8:30 pm…in still drizzling rain! Nicky chased tennis balls and buried them, Chipley chased tennis balls and partially returned them, he and Connor (the big bulldog-mix) ran up and down the beach, it was a blast. The fact that they stayed and played (even Eddie did a bit of running and chasing) for so long in wet weather defied all odds. Chipley was pretending to be a Border Collie ('throw the ball, throw the ball, throw the ball) and seeing Nicky chase a ball, bat it around then play at burying it was a hoot! Once a ball hit the water, she would sit and stare at it (willing it to return? or for a human to fetch it for her?) but on the beach she was demonstrating some fancy foot-work to get the ball where she wanted it. The only negative was Chipley stepped in some big glob of pink marine grease and I had to try and get it our of his foot-pads, which in turn got it all over my hands! The salt and sand did take care of 90% of the grease, but we had to have a foot wash when we got home… Chip jumped into the bathtub when I asked him to!
Truly an amazing night of un-basenji-like behavior!
Good thing they had such fun last night, today TS Debbie is keeping us indoors, and they are missing their weekly basenji get together. Just took each out under an umbrella to get the bladders empty, now all are snoozing away. We are lucky, we rarely get all-day rain here, but today may be the exception! Good thing Buddy'sPal has her nice covered potty-area, Uzie will be using it today!

  • Yes Anne, had to use it. And his winter coat too this afternoon to further alleviate that cold stuff from distracting him to go…..waited at the gate and not under the canopy for me and the others to get back from the needed walk to promote potty for the older generation a few yards away-go figure! Been non-stop with wind and rain (at times pelting!) ALL day-looks the same in Tampa as well. We all just woke up from snoozing this afternoon. Hope there has been a break for you guys! Sounded like fun at the beach, sans grease....they always find it don't they! ps: I have decided to only give a light dinner. they all just pee and so as not put undue pressure on the bowels. Uzie has 'poked' but not 'dropped'. Too much rain!

  • Winston, our two year old, will use our small backyard deck area when it's dry out, but if the ground is even slightly damp - he chooses to hold it, even if he's uncomfortable, so in those cases, one of us has to get dressed, harness him up, then take him out front to the street. Unfortunately, going out front makes things even more interesting, since he does not like going out when it's dark outside, so if it's rainy and dark? We get to walk him to the four-way intersection down the block, which is brightly illuminated. Then, and only then, will he "go."

Perhaps. If he feels like it.

Amy, our previous basenji, wouldn't even do that. She'd just hold it… and she could hold it for ridiculous durations, but then, she was an odd one, even for a basenji.

  • they dont.

lol- they hate anything wet- unless there is a squirrel running through itl

  • Usually I will wait until it dries, otherwise we have raincoats for both of them.

  • I guess I'm just lucky with Finn. I'm sure he'd prefer it dry, although hes fine in the rain and snow! Maybe getting him around December helped

Abbey was almost banned from my son's house after she killed the cat's feather on a stick thingy. We don't have our own cat although she'd like to have one of her own. She loves cats!

A coupple of issues in this thread! (Way to multi-task here people!) Treats: the whole "upset tummy" is definately a too much of a good thing issue. Whatever you decide to treat with, make them very small and just watch how much you give. My dogs go nuts for bologna or plain ham. Cheese is the perenial favorite, but never underestimate the power of a "Good Boy!!" Coats & "Cold" Weather: My boys have it rough. Living in the Midwest, it is not uncomming to spend all witner in the single digits (not counting windchill which often kicks us into the negative teens, if not worse). Both boys have dog coats made by Lands End in the same style (and cold weather specifications) as their Squall jacket series. It consists of an easy belly band and front chest closure meathod. No worries about tails or legs. Easy on, easy off. And my boys live in them during the winter. Dogs, just like people, quickly acclimate to the weather. If we deicde it's "Cold" at 50 degrees, they start to feel that way. If we decide 50 is downright balmy, the dogs learn that too. Walking: Oh, the perenial issue of B's! I agree with many of the posters here: it's all in the tone and your attitude. If you decide to be upbeat and positive and decisive, the B will follow! (But probably will quit at mile 6 if he hasn't had his ice cream yet… grin)

It's funny how Lillie refuses to go outside in the rain to do her business. Surprise yesterday when it was raining, she spotted the rottweiler who lives down the block. She ran outside on my deck to get a good view of him. Hmm, what's that all about?:) Thankfully, it has stopped raining (at least for awhile) so my husband and son just took Lillie out for a long, long walk. She is so funny! Jodie:)

Basenjis have desires, we have desires to get to work on time. You can feed your b twice a day and do a poop right after they eat. That will help. When it is raining or cold I just throw on my slicker and accept that I will be getting as wet as my B. You may want to try Muttlucks which are great waterproof shoes made for dogs in the water or snow.
