Life as a big boy

  • Yeah, absolutely!

  • All my good ones are on my camera not my phone but here are two…

  • And, I can see how much he likes stepping in the water!

  • AMAZING pics! Thanks for sharing

  • @krunzer:

I am surprised the swans got so close. But then again they must have realized that Basenji's melt in water…

    Exactly!

Incredible pics til the end.. those are just wrong.. a basenji in water? How cruel you are to mock those of us with melting basenjis, those of us who worry about poop/pee exploding dogs due to severe aversion to anything wet touching their feet. Shame on you!

LOL I love the pics. Geese can be nasty so I like one is nice!

  • Lol, he hates rain and when it's wet! I can't explain how shocked I was the first time he dove into the water to get close to the swan, I was utterly unprepared!! A dog from land is one thing but a dog two feet from an alpha swan- ugh, I was ready to take my shoes of an dive in, it took some getting used to but I truly think the swan thinks I Oakley as a goofy harmless funny looking thing…he's totally unphased. As soon as they see us they swim a couple hundred yards to us, it's a joy bc it tires him out

  • If he had a straight tail I would swear he was a pointer!!

here's a better one of him and his friend, who we call snow

  • LOL, great pics and he looks super!

  • Thanks! I really think he's starting to be ready for a sister….hopefully a little red a white or brindle...

Which = I must be crazy!!

  • Amazing friendship, white swan, black basenji, who would have thought! Thank you for sharing!

  • First Basenji's

Wow! Thanks for sharing these! I loved your pics!

  • Wonderful pix! Oakley is a very charming boy. You can tell he's a lover of life and must be loads of fun to have around!

LOL– Spencer used to do that paw up and laser stare thing when he was younger and had something locked in sight. Luckily, I usually had him on leash, because B Rule #1: Basenji want, Basenji get. :)

@Aileen, nice to hear! BRAT, Basenji Rescue And Transport will be having their national conference in Rochester NY this June ... you can meet lots of Basenjis! I'm sure Arlo is tones of fun especially at 2 yrs of age! My daughters Husky would steal things off counter, still does on certain occasions but he learned risks when I put some mouse traps and sticky tape on the counter. The traps chosen were "weaker" ones and I'd unhook one spring so only one side was loaded. Of course, a Husky has BIG paws ... so I wasn't greatly concerned and as I tested upon myself, wasn't too worried. Too, can add a few layers of duck tape on the metal to "soften" it even more.

@kjdonkers: How civilized! I can't imagine getting Lela or Binti to do that. You would be surprised! I taught him "pick it up" with clicker training. It's a very useful generic command. You add the names of things as you go. Getting him to bring the item to me was a natural progression, starting with insisting he give it to me to "earn" his reward. Increasing distance gradually leads to a very good retrieve! Perry works best just before his supper time. He knows when he gets it right, dinner will be served. Motivation! :)

Yeahhh - pretty typical basenji behavior for his age. I gave up on that type of bed, and now they both have big rectangular stuffed beds with fake sheepskin on top. I put a blanket over their beds, and now that they are 3 and 3 1/2, if they decide they are going to chew on anything, it will be the blanket. Shaye, the younger one, also likes another dog blanket totally covering her, and once in a while she'll get up with that still on her, hanging like a train, because it gets stuck on her tail - looks adorable, embarrasses her, so she sometimes bites that one too.

Monstrous Lilu! :) Update: She is 21.5 from withers and she is 48lbs, loves our new kitty Nora and is somewhat gentle with her. I am actually more afraid for the dog than I am the cat haha [image: attachment_p_109804_0_2010-04-21-12.49.18.jpg]
