Hello from Baltimore

  • First Basenji's

I am new to the forum and a new basenji owner.
Kongo was born on 12/12/2012. He came to live with us In February. We are having soooo much fun with him. He is just the cutest thing ever. I am hooked!!!
I am looking forward to learning all the tricks of the Basenji world. I am a first time dog owner and I am very aware that during this training process I am going to need all the help I can get.

  • Welcome to the forum :)

  • hi Karen - a big welcome to you and Kongo. Such excitement! Basenjis are such wonderful dogs. :) And what an incredible birthday date - amazing!

Please ask as many questions as you want. There are very knowledgeable breeders on this forum and also those who have lived with their companion basenjis for years. Tons of experience on this forum. May I ask if Kongo's breeders had the parent dogs tested for Fanconi Syndrome? There is now a DNA test available for it. I have sent away for Kipawa's, even though he will be either carrier or clear. It's huge peace of mind to know because you can then set up the correct health plan for your basenji.

Looking forward to hearing more from you and Kongo!

Thank you both. Kongo's parents were DNA tested. Another funny thing about the birthday is that Kongo and his father share the 12/12 birthday.
I am sure I will be asking you plenty of questions along the way.
How much is the DNA testing if you don't mind me asking? Where did you send it?

Do you know if his Sire/Dam were DNA tested with the Linkage Test or the Direct Test? And information on the test can be found at www.offa.org

The test is 65.00, you order the cheek swab and then send it back to OFA.

Who did you get your Basenji Boy from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis

For sure, welcome to me forum!
The only trouble with the amazing birthday date of 12/12/12 is that, um, it's in the future. Oh well.

  • My girls were born on 12/12 as well but in 2010. Welcome to the forum.

Update. I started a multi-purpose facebook page. I wanted to post things about Kongo and also share happy/odd news. Hoping to find tons of Basenji owners. It would be great to find some in the area as well so that Kongo could have a B playmate. Check out our page

Mallia is the third Basenji we have the pleasure of having in the last 30 years. She is a female where as the first two were males.

Hi Kiro, Welcome our neck of the woods. I live just a bit past Emmittsburg in PA so I'm not too far. The Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club meets at the Carroll County Agricultural Center right there in Westminster. Our next meeting is 1 June and there will also be a spring fun match that same day. It starts at 0900. There is a Yahoo group for the club that has info about the event. It's fun and games. It's really neat to see so many basenjis in one place. Hope you can make it. It's a nice club to belong to. Karen

@WriggleysMom: We've always had rescues and I feel like I've missed out on puppy antics, so I'm debating. Toby doesn't baroo or wag his tail and I really miss being met at the door with a welcome baroo and a tail trying to wag itself off!! I had a puppy and was getting the urge for another but now we have a 7-mo old foster and I can't take my eyes off her. I remembered I really did not miss that!
