A good "safety" exercise to practice is a command that tells your dog treats are in the offing, and use it at irregular intervals when you are walking. Combine the command with a total release of pressure on the leash, preferably when your dog has firm tension on said leash. Then if something unexpected happens you have a built in reaction of the dog to look to you for a reward. This won't work if your dog is pursuing a major distraction, but should give you an edge if you have an equipment failure in otherwise neutral conditions. (you can carry this one step further by "accidentally" dropping the leash in a controlled area, or with a light line attached for safety, and practice until the dog turns to you when it feels a total release)
Lost Afghan Dover Plains, NY (cross-posted)

Hello. A black and tan male Afghan named Kashim ran out of this home this morning and is loose near Poughkeepsie, NY.
Kashim is a rescue who was recently placed. Kashim is shy and in a new environment. We really need all the help we can get to catch Kashim. He was lastseen in Dover Plains New York (about 10-15 miles from his home) on Monday. He is moving quickly, Is anyone able to post flyers within 70-80 miles of Dover Plains???? The area is rural, lots of woods and big properties. If anyone is near and can help search, post flyers, call shelters, get a trap, etc. please contact Ulrike Reinisch ASAP at usreinisch@gmail.com. Our best shot is to get the word out and get some sightings so we know where to look. Please feel free to forward this to anyone of any breed who can help. We need everyone we can get. -
I hope they find him soon!
