My Basenjis

  • There's been a basenji around ever since I can remember. Lady was the first one – she was the same age I was but she died when she was 3. I still remember her, she was playfull and gangly. She got hit by a car, she escaped and got hit by a car on a country road that had about six cars on it a day. Bad timing. A bit later we got Amber, she was the dog I grew up with. Amber was wicked smart, she figured out a lot of stuff dogs wouldn't normally figure out. She died when she was 16. Now I have Nikky. She's 12 now but she's still pretty lively. She's really allergic to wheat so we have to be very careful about what she eats -- and she gets lots of long walks (she loves exploring and checking her pee mail) but she's still a bit pudgy. The vet says she's in pretty good health though.... I'll put pictures of her up if everyone promises not to make fun of her! -- when she was younger she could have kicked all of your taught little basenji's asses! Oh yeah -- and Nikky gets along with most dogs -- as long as they are not little white dogs -- I tried to tell her she was being a racist, but she didn't understand.

  • Yeah my B's hate Boxers. I have tried to tell them they Boxers are just doggies too, went through one ear and out the other. Much like the other things I have tried to teach my B's. Welcome to the forum and yes we all love pictures and would love to see some of her!

  • Welcome :)

  • Glad you found the forum.

  • Welcome to both of you… and oh yes, pictures please!

  • Welcome to you and Nicky. We look forward to pictures and of course we won't laugh. We know how easy it is for Basenjis to get pudgy!.

  • I think every B is a bit racist towards some kinda dog. Anubis has a HATRED for Huskies for some reason…lol. Welcome to the forum! You MUST post pics :)

  • Welcome, my Nicky is a little pudgy too, and at 14 is as spry as she needs to be!

  • As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.

@allyn said in Basenji mix?: Meanwhile I know that like a Basenji, he should never be off leash, and we always need to make sure the gate is securely shut, I have had Basenjis for a long, long time now. I have always let them run off lead in the woods away from traffic. They have all been taught - and I have had up to eight at a time although am now down to one, soon to be two (!) - to return to me if I whistle. Basenjis CAN be taught to run free and to obey commands. Yes, gates should be kept shut, tightly, at all times. But away from traffic, they can be trained to behave and allowed to run free. I have bought a puppy sling for my new boy so I can take him to the woods with Hoover, and let him meet lots of people and thoroughly socialise until he has had his shots. I don't intend to deprive Hoover of her freedom just because of the puppy. He will learn to walk on a leash but mostly he'll be the hunter nature intended him to be.

@krunzer: Keep them separate in their own crates. The older one may not want to put up with puppy play in a big crate. When crated mine are always separate unless they are at the kennel, then they are in the same pen because Becca is not fond of the kennel. PS, basenjis don't like being woken up much, and one dog annoying another who wants to stay asleep might result in a fracas in a confined space; never a good thing.

It was actually the vet tech wasn't the most brilliant thing on the planet… needless to say I found another vet the next week and they think she might have some bulldog in her... what a mix. I believe that she definitely could have some bulldog in her judging by the way she lays around the house.

@cmd: Our 12yr old Ramsey is from one of Linda's Basenji's and a very sweet guy. Have you tried Hacker's Basenji's? Ann is an active and very responsible breeder and she's near Danville. I can't say enough good things about her. We've had 2 of her dogs and both have had great temperaments. She's friends with a lot of other breeders in the area as well. If she doesn't have any available you could also try Select Basenji's near Dayton. I think she was co-breeding last year. We have a Select and she's a great little dog – a ball of energy though! I too was looking for a Basenji last year at this time. We lost our 14 yr old also year to date and felt a puppy would help everyone move on. Sort of became a mission. Puppies can be hard to come by this late, but we did find several. Nope, Tracy's breeding didn't take this year…but I think she is planning one for spring :)

Remember however for a full thyroid panel usually isn't done at places that do bloodwork… and also what a Vet would call "low normal" for most dogs, for a Basenji it is Too Low...
