    I have noticed lately that Cali will not eat any food out of her dog bowl anymore. When I first got her from the Humane Society they were feeding her Science Diet which she did not eat even after trying to mix it with the Science Diet soft food. I have started her on Pedigree and a few times a week I will mix soft dog food with it and she normally devours it.
    Well the past few days I had noticed that she has been leaving her dog bowl full, even if I put soft food in it. Sometime on occasion I will give her some table scraps, but not often. I tried to give her a piece of banana this morning which she usually loves, but she spit it back out on the floor.
    The only time she will eat her food now is if I put in in her Kong or lay it directly on the floor:confused: If I do this she will devour it up, but she seems to have an aversion to her dog bowl. Oh, and also, if her water is not cold enough she will not drink it. I usually give her bottled water from the fridge or put a couple of ice cubes in her drinking water ( I have created a spoiled BRAT) Now I will have to figure out how to get her to start eating out of her bowl again.
    Does anyone else's Basenjis have any eating quirks? She still ceases to amaze me. Everything day I learn something new about her and it makes me appreciate having found her even more. Even though she has me pulling my hair out almost everyday I wouldnt trade her. My mother asked me if I regret getting her and I say absolutely not.
    Oh No gotta go she just bought a chewed ink pen to me in her mouth!!! Whew;)

    Why does she have to eat out of a bowl?
    Why not try feeding her on a pan or platter – something with more shallow sides than a bowl?

    I understand about the Science Diet - all my Basenjis have hated it! We use Eukanuba Lamb and Rice or Kirkland Lamb and Rice from Costco mixed with a little warm water and a tablespoon or so of Pedigree canned. (of course, they also get a little Red Barn rolled, green beans if I'm trying to get them to lose weight, left-over bait from the dog shows… no, ours aren't spoiled either!) Only get the Pedigree canned puppy or the CHOPPED dinners (not the chunk) as those are the only ones without wheat. Lots of Basenjis are sensitive to wheat. My daughter feeds Purina One Lamb and Rice.

    A plate or pie tin might work for her. Sometimes they just get notions!!! One of my girls won't eat if her dish isn't in the right place on the mat.

    I am so glad I read this. We are having eating problems too but after reading your replies I know this issue is probably stress and hopefully will stop. Our two basenji's (3&4) have always had a pretty structured eating schedule. The boys the 4 yr old and our old elkhound have always ate together since the basenji came to us at 6 mo. The girl eats next. It has worked great for years. Our elkie went to doggy heaven this week, he was 14 and was greatly afflicted with renal and liver failure. The b's don't seem to look for him or miss him till its supper time. Our boy doesn't seem to be able to eat alone without his buddy even though we are with him. I know that a restructure of eating habits is needed and the b's will eat together now and hopefully that should resolve our issues of the moment. And as I have learned owning B's there can be alot of issues of the moment with them

    Let me know when you find out how to get a B to not surf your tables, kitchen counters, bathroom counters, bedroom furniture for things. My B, Sahara, does this all the time, and we have pretty much cleared all tables of my nick nacks, picture frames, coffee table books and such. Sahara has destroyed many of my things when she grew tall enough to stand on those hind legs and reach real f a r, with that long neck. She pretty much knows the Leave It Command, but she is stubborn which is a B trait. So, good luck, and just make sure you put up your valuables for now.

    Dogs are not completely carnivorous. They do like fruits and veggies and sometimes even need them for a complete balanced diet. I feed mine various veggies-they seem to like lettuce the best. Eating dirt could be signs of various causes-including boredom. Best to investigate the upset tummy thing though!!

    The neighbors boxer was not so much aggressive with Cali as she was with my brothers boxer. Cali usally plays with their German Shepherd pup and they get along really well. True, I shouldnt have taken Lady anywhere near their boxer, but I thought they would get along because their boxer gets along with the other boxer down the street.. My brother also has a Cane Corso(Italian Mastiff) and a Rottweiler and his Boxer is used to playing with them all of the time because they live together. When I say discipline I mean more of a "time out" in the crate or a stern NO! Sometimes if I clap my hands once and say NO! at the same time she gets the message. I have had her 2 months now and we are both making progress. I am learning what worked for my other dogs does not necessarily work for Cali. I do notice that training her is a lot different from my previous 2 dogs (Pitbull/Rottweiler mix and a German Shepherd). I have been reading a lot of the posts about obedience and training on the forum and it has helped a lot. Cali is like no other dog that I have owned, but I like being challenged.:) :) :)

    Hollie is also a mixed breed. She is Basenji and Whippet. I found out early on that she fears no other dogs. She is approximately 30 lbs and almost 2 years old. She plays with dogs of all sizes on a regular basis and backs down from none. Her "boyfriend" at the local dogpark is a 6 month old Irish Wolfhound ,whose favorite game is let's put Hollie's head in my mouth, this puppy is already 3 times her size in body (not sure of his weight at this point - but he is expected to be over 170 lbs full grown). Hollie plays with the Mastiffs, Ridgebacks and other large breeds. I prefer this now, seeing how rough a basenji can be when playing.
