How many rotate dog foods?

    So I'm looking into rotating between Orijen for fall and winter and TOTW for spring and summer. I would also like to add in a meal of dehydrated raw food in there as well. How many of you rotate between foods? How do the dogs do when you're transitioning? Is this bad for their stomachs or is it okay to have a rotating/changing diet? For budgies it's better to have multiple/different foods for them to eat… is this the same for dogs? Just wondering what your experiences are.

    I have always rotated foods, that way when traveling I don't have to worry if I can't find one or the other. But I change every 4 to 5 wks to different mostly grain free kibble. But I also make my own "wet" food to mix in. Usually ground chicken/turkey and veggies, steamed. Start off slow, but once you have rotated a few times, has never been a problem for mine.

    I do quite a bit. I don't feed dry, only wet and frozen raw. I do give a cooked boneless chicken thigh and some of the frozen (duck or chicken) at each meal. I use 3 different types of Taste of the Wild, 4 different types of canned tripe from Tripett (venison, lamb, beef and beef with duck) and sometimes Evo canned venison, turkey or chicken. I just vary the canned every 3 days when the can runs out. So I mix a little of each of the different canned types at each meal so I'll have 3 cans open in the frig.

    I change all the time. He gets whatever is in promotion from the premium brands when I'm buying food. Usually he gets dry food, but also from time to time some meat, fish… He has never had any problems transferring from food. But I have had dogs that had problems every time when I changed food, so they allways got the same food.

    I used to mix two dry foods, now we have quite a little feeding circus. I have 3 bags of dry, depending on which the recently-very-picky Nicky (since she haws sick) will eat. The boys will eat rocks if I put green beans in it. All the kibble is good quality, they seem fine with whatever they get.

    Mine pretty much get the same kibble (Taste of The Wild) every day. But for variety I will sometimes add leftover chicken or broccoli or green beans or just mix in some water from cooked veggies. They also get frozen chunks (small) of cheap steak most days when I leave for work or a frozen marrow bone.

    I also change foods. I usually either stay within the same brand or the same protein but a different brand. I have not had any problems but I do read the ingredients carefully to make sure there is nothing in there that could cause allergy problems for Arnie. My dogs are not picky eaters.

    i stay with the same brand, good quality kibble. thats all Hope gets with maybe a raw bone and/or bits of left over meat (such as chicken) and pumpkin to have in the evening. when i was working in a grooming salon she used to get other premium kibble (samples for our customers) as "treats" - she was none the wiser and thought "yummo!" hehe and never had issues with it :)

    also -when we have fostered dogs she has had some of their kibble and had no issues with eating it. im pretty lucky i dont have a fussy eater :)

    Hey Jeff, Thanks for the information, and PS: really enjoyed your website. All the pictures of all the dogs, but of course the ones of the Basenjis being used as they are from your litters, OUTSTANDING WORK! Wish I lived closer!

    @Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

    @agilebasenji: To clarify, I'm not feeding my dogs differently because they are show/performance dogs; I'm feeding them differently because that is what works for the individual. Where I see feeding a dog differently because it is a performance/working dog (NOT a conformation/show dog) is where the dog is burning TONS of calories. Examples would be a working border collie/kepie or, perhaps, a greyhound that is being run many times a week (I don't know how they work things at the track), a working military/border patrol dog that is logging in miles of work daily, etc. My performance/show dogs are more weekend warriors by comparison. Training less than an hour everyday (not that I really train 7 days a week), hardly needs a special diet (IMHO). I will say I feed the basenjis more in the winter than the summer; they need more calories when it's cold. I also cook an egg on show/agility/coursing mornings, but that's because Digital is a picky boy and I need him to having something in his tummy when he's performing in agility/coursing. And it has just sort of carried over even though Miss Zest would never turn down food of any sort. Of course that's not too different from most weekends since I usually cook a big breakfast on Sat and Sun and everyone gets a bite of egg then. However, I will say I know of some people who do feed their current show dogs a better diet than the non-show dogs, which I find very sad. Well put, especially your last comment… I totally agree.... and pets/companions deserve the best we can feed them... no different then show/performace dogs...

    The truth is all dry dog food has been processed and heated to death as to make it a poor food item no matter how good the ingredients are. Just look at it. That dry, crunchy pellet was actually meat, veggies, etc at one time.

    I went to two health food type pet stores yesterday and asked a bunch of questions about the different types of holistic dog foods and other foods that they had. I came away from both stores with several brochures and tons of food samples!! From one store I got a plastic grocery bag FULL of Timberwolf Organics and from the other store I got a bag full of EVO Innova samples. Enough to feed these guys for more than a week!! I had no idea that you could get samples from the stores!! The dogs seem to love both brands. We're taking it slow though so I can keep track of the reactions. They currently eat Nutro Max Ultra Puppy.
