    We adopted Zoey 1 month after the Vet took her right front leg. She had been chained up, at 11 months old, and left out for 3 days. No one checking on her. The meter man discovered her and call the rescue people. They took her to the vet and the vet said if she got there 30 mins later, she would have bled out. You can see the other front leg with a big scar from the chain.

    But now, she is spoiled rotten. She drives to places with us, sleeps with us, and even chases the cat up the stairs!

    We adopted 2 others (Rotty/Sheperd 10 month old & Masitff/Pitt 3 month old) for her to play with. And yes it is true….the basenji is the alpha. Kinda funny seeing the rotty being put in her place by Zoey. Just seeing the size difference.:)

    Oh no, that's terrible! But now she thankfully has a great life ahead of her because of you good people. I've seen three legged dogs run around the beach like nothings missing. Great to have you on the forum too. Please post picks of your pack.

    You guys are special for adopting her. Wish I was closer to give you a hug, but here's a virtual one <hug>.

    When travelling, I have seen many 3 legged dogs in poorer countries. They get on with their lives like nothing is wrong. It's really beautiful and I bet Zoey will teach many people who cross her path.

    Kipawa works as a therapy dog. Could you do something like this with Zoey? She would be a great ambassador for keeping on going when the going gets tough!</hug>

    I also thank you for being so good to give this boy a,home. it sounds as though he's had a really rough time in the past but I know you'll make up for all that. I hope he gives you a lot of pleasure.

    Awww. Such a cute little girl. I think that we would be a good foster for a dog like her, or one of the FL dogs. We have experience working with pathologically shy dogs. We have an already established relationship with a great local trainer, and with a veterinary behaviorist. We have 3 dogs here to help with the socialization. But we have 3 dogs, and a fourth coming within the year. I'm afraid my heart is bigger than what we can really handle. I'm also afraid because there is no guarantee she will be adopted. If I knew it was short-term, and she could go to another place after a few months of work, I would be much more inclined to jump at the chance to foster. But, with the cats we foster, one has been here a year (tomorrow will be a year actually), and another we finally gave in and adopted after 2 years of swearing we wouldn't. The "normal" cats get adopted quickly (we have had about 10 go through our house, with the longest staying 6 mos.), but the behavior cases that need socialization and desensitization/counter conditioning work tend to stay. We have only had 2 foster dogs, and they were great and found great homes, but we are running out of friends to convince to adopt dogs. :) -Nicole

    The thing with multi-generational mutts is that they tend toward the dog "default" which is the same look that you see in many street dogs and pariah dog, medium size, prick ears, and often tan coloring. Since basenjis are a primitive dog they share these characteristics.

    Tegs, Sorry that it took me a while to reply. I would love to trade pics with you. Everyday that passes, I am reminded of the Basenji Code. She is a bolter, I am happy that we have a storm door to help.
