Smart Basenji - Dumb Owner!

Basenji Talk
  • This morning I ran the water and filled my coffee cup up to make some instant and she was right there and stared at me and the cup. I told her no, it's for me. The third time it happened, I went DUH! Sure enough, her water dish was empty. Always amazed at these critters!

  • My B's water dish will evaporate before he touches it but he will take a drink from the toilet.

  • They figure out how to get our attention one way or another. :)

I usually get reminded if I'm 30-60 minutes late of feeding Kananga. Of course he will not remind me if I somehow feed him twice by mistake.

  • If I am late feeding or his water dish it empty my guy will actually bring me his dish and put it on my lap. They are so smart!

  • If I'm late going out to lunch (a daily event) my guy will sometimes bring his Kong upstairs to remind me to fill it for him. He is really saying "Would you please get out of here so I can have my lunch?" (he gets the filled Kong and a roller ball full of kibble). Not bad for a dog that used to have separation anxiety…...now he lobbies for us to leave!

  • If Shaye's water dish is empty she will come and stare at me then walk into the kitchen; if I'm sitting on the couch, she will bounce the decorative bowl on my coffee table a few times and stare at me. If I'm too engrossed to notice, she will go throw her water dish around making enough noise so I have to notice. Smart dog, stupid owner indeed.

  • HaHaHa! these stories are so funny! I guess this is what I have to look forward to. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for thinking of the puppy's needs. Please, contact the breeder first if you signed a contract. Responsible breeders have contracts, nearly all requiring you contact them if things don't work out. They may have other homes waiting already. If the breeder sold you the puppy without a contract, then there are a few here looking for a puppy that might be interested. Make sure you get references and vet references so that your puppy goes to a home, not someone wanting to use him for breeding in some puppymill. If you can't find a good home and you are willing to place without being paid, BRAT can be helpful in screening and getting into a good home in most cases. California has a separate basenji rescue also... http://www.basenjirescue.com/ ... however, I have no idea if they do fanconi testing. If your pup does not have clear parents, or at least one clear, please get him tested before you place him. A home getting a dog with a genetic disorder is more likely to abandon it if they don't know upfront what they are getting. If you have the parents' registration numbers or names, it is easy to verify if they were tested.

@Cafu LOL on cutting leash.. I am certain they have retractable scissors in their gums. I have had mine cut leashes and cut straps to clothing that were so smooth, nothing else but scissors explains it (okay or razor blades). Which is why I put these on the collars... snap/ o ring, chain, o ring, leash [image: 1508253202524-leash.jpg]

I don’t bathe my three very often, they’re outside all the time and sleep in their dog house with hay and a heater when it gets cold, We bathe them when they get muddy at the park.

Yup - Tanza is correct. I have allergies to two of mine and don't have allergies to the other two - and 3 of my 4 are related. Oh and they definitely shed! Pat's recommendation of taking a t-shirt or towel with you and then sleeping with it is a great idea.

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!
