Toys to keep them busy in the crate?

Basenji Talk
  • Oh yeah I have heard about antlers…..I have not tried them yet myself (maybe I will when I am feeling a little more hungry)..but I would like to know if the dogs like them or not. Tucker has softer teeth and I would think that these are maybe too hard for him?

  • Mine love deer antlers and they would get them more often if they weren't so expensive. I also have tried that Tibetan yak cheese and they love that but it doesn't last long enough considering how expensive it is - mine finished it off in a day (and according to everything I read it is supposed to last longer than that). Honestly, bones from the butcher or the dental dinosaurs are what I use most often - they last the longest.

  • @renaultf1:

Can I ask how much the deer antlers cost?

  • I gave up bones for chewing on when my vet showed me cracks in my dog's teeth. She just chewed too aggressively. I wonder if antlers are softer?

  • i buy antlers on ebay, and they're not expensive. i do worry about their hardness, though. suki just chews them every now and then - they're not her favorite.

  • Cricket gets elk antlers. We have a family member that runs an all natural dog food business, so I get my pick of the antler chews. I always get the ones that are cut in half, and throw them out when she is done all of the marrow. She goes crazy for them!

  • The antlers, here anyway, are pretty cheap - maybe a $1 or 2 for 4-5 inches. But mine won't touch them after they've chewed into the first inch or so.
Marrow bones I get at the grocery store.
Peanutbutter-yogurt bones I make myself using old marrow bones – a bit more yogurt (not flavored or at least only vanilla) than peanut butter and then I mix in some kibble. One cup of yogurt will make about 12-16 bones depending on bone thickness.

  • Our vet said that bone chew was bad for thier teeth, that it loosenses them from the gums?

Is this true? In the wild wouldn't dog chew on bones anyways? Mine loves all bones. Usually I get my marrow bones from the butcher.

  • What about them eating the shards of the bones?

  • Both my breeder and my vet said bones are fine and help clean teeth but the bones are NOT cooked. As a result there are no shards. I have given turkey/chicken necks but never the other bones from birds as they tend to be skinny and fragile to start with.

  • Frozen food is very good. I usually give my dogs raw bones/marrow bones and meat with bones that I find cheap. Turkey necks are also very good for keeping them pups busy for a while.

I'm kinda scared to give my dogs toys alone, especially in a crate where they can easily get very bored. Chew and eat a rubber toy, isn't good for a dog stomach. You can get the same problem with bones too, but they are probably easier to digest, than rubber/plastic.

And remember, always feed RAW bones, never cooked! Cooked bones splinter easily, and can tear up a stomach … good to remember. :)

I see your post was back in Jan. so I hope you have your new basenji settled in. I also adopted a beasenji in Jan. She is my second. I adopted a 5 year old to be with my 3 yr. old, who had had 2 litters in the past and was bred for a 3rd one, but didn’t get pregnant. So the breeder, the same breeder our boy came from, decided to let her go to a forever home. I had to wait quite a while for her to be ready and I felt just like you. I couldn’t wait! I kept texting the breeder questions, request for photos, etc. When we picked her up she seemed comfortable with us right from the start. She has been a wonderful addition to our family, a good match for our 3yr. old boy. He’s a toughie but I think he’s met his match with her. He’s so much happier with his own friend. They love to be together. I hope your new pup is adjusting just as well as mine. Have fun. I think they make us laugh every day. Yes, you have to be on your toes with these guys, you have to make them a big part of your life. They can never just be a fixture. They are work but it’s worth it all. 3 years ago I was a newbie but not anymore, and I’m loving this wild ride.

The only thing I have found that will hold Corin is a Kennel-Aire Commander crate, because it has 1 inch squares on all 6 sides. The new Kennel-Aires have larger sqaures on the bottom, and he has figured out how to slide the tray out and get out the bottom of the crate.

So far Shaye's favorites are the "no stuffing" animals with squeaky toys at each end - she has a squirrel and a beaver - she runs around squeaking them - strange thing, when her puppy teeth were out and she was getting her big teeth, for a while she had trouble making them squeak and she would toss them in the air and drag them around running full-out, then jump on them and try to get them to squeak again. She also has a set of hard plastic keys on a ring that she enjoys tossing and chasing (and getting us to toss for her of course. Her favorite game - reverse fetch.

Mine like the Buster Cube, and similar balls that hold kibble. Also stuffed animals (garage sales, thrift stores), and the anmials that make repeating noises with a squeeze. Nicky likes baby toys, like the ones that you pull a cord and it plays music. They have favotire stuffed toys they have had for years, and others die quickly. Nicky loves to steal my shoes and eat them, my husband bought her a purse of her own at a garage sale, lovely leather. She has been slowly working on it for many months, knows it is HERS. Mine have almost never liked real dog toys. Anne in Tampa

You could also try the small RC cars. The B's really like it as well as this little helicopter thing I have. They also like my furry blue pig-but they can't have that one!!
