Question, ethical breeders

Breeder Talk
  • How can we discuss breeders who are not ethical on this site?
Not trying to cause trouble, but if some folks know others are not doing
right by the dogs they have, how can we share it?

  • Think that is a delicate subject. What you might find a bad breeder, I might find a good breeder. Every breeder has his good and bad things. There are a few who are really bad, in allmost everyone's eyes, but where do you draw the line of what is good, acceptable and bad?

  • I think if you are going to talk about "ethics" it needs to be hypothetical. When you get into naming names, there can be questions of libel unless the information is provable fact, not opinion. Probably why the thread was shut down…..

  • If there is a problem, I would talk to the breeder first, then as eeefarrm said, make sure not to use names if you post anything here.

  • I certainly think we can come up with a list of things we think make a bad and good breeder in general, though.

  • My bottom line for a bad breeder is someone who doesn't do right by the dogs/puppies they have.

  • @DebraDownSouth:

Debra, I like your idea about two lists. There will never be 100% agreement on anything (what is bad, what is good), but if we keep the goal in mind, which is education about basenjis, perhaps we can come to some acceptances.

I'm going to say something, and it isn't about anyone on Basenji Forums at all, it's a general life statement. If we can try to keep the human ego out of the equation, and concentrate on ensuring both new and repeat basenji owners have good tools to work with, then we are truly caring of the breed.

  • Well said, Fran.

  • Fran, that is an excellent post. Lets look at this from the prospective of the dog!

  • Fran, I totally agree with you.

  • We could do it section at a time, starting with health testing. :)

Which honestly has been done a number of times on this Forum… just do search for the threads.

And beyond that these threads including the one that was shut down was about the new imports being accepted into the stud books.

So, do you see that as unethical? Guess I don't know what you mean.

  • Sharron, this entire discussion was first based around the admission of stock into the stud books. Each and every time the threads were hi-jacked so that no real discussion could be had by the group.

This particular topic has been covered over and over. Just search the threads

@timothyhanselman If on FB, you may want to join BASENJIS in need: Golden Opportunity. There are some adults looking for homes right now. https://www.facebook.com/groups/375245789899780 And as one of the posts advises: "Stay patient. A lot of inexperienced people are buying puppies they are ill prepared for, from greeders who do not take their basenjis back. I suspect in the next 6-8 months we might see/learn of an influx of basenjis needing homes." Alas....

Exactly– responsible small breeders will be shut down and puppymillers flourish if we don't.

@irena: If the brindle female carrie a tri gene, there could be a trindle, couldnt be? Yes, if the brindle carries the Tri recessive gene, then they can have trindles. Also because the sire is a Tri, the pups will have the Tri gene

Thanks for all of the replies. I am going to find a breeder that is listed on one of these sites. I didn't think that this person was reputable since there was hardly any information listed on the puppies.

@Lauma: Do you have any information on Itzyu Basenjis in VA? My mother and brother are adopting a "Golden Opportunity" dog from them next month. Can't go wrong with a Basenji from Itzyu Basenjis…. my opinion is go for it..... and they will get a great "golden opportunity" dog from them!

@Vanessa: We use those dog bath whipes that you can purchase from the local pet store. They work great. Baths are horrible in our house and I often am also taking a bath with our boy since he flings about in the tub. I get soaked! It just isn't a good experience. LOL Here is a great item that anyone can install on their shower for giving baths… and if you have an enclosed shower stall or bath, just get in with them... http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=394&gift=False&mscssid=3819DB8DB28D4BD090FED7D7C151F99B
