  • @sharronhurlbut:

Fran, did he recently get off the pain pills? That could have caused some upsets..
    Just a thought.

Sharron, good thought. Yes, it's important to remember coming off meds can cause instabilities just like going on meds can. Kipawa has been off of them for quite awhile now. He only took them from Aug. 15 - 18, just long enough to get him over the worst pain. The dose was not that high, so no real need to titrate down, which is what I usually do for meds taken over a longer period of time.

  • Ok, it was just a thought. He is such a well socialized boy, just thinking the meds might have been the issue. Hopefully, this will be over quickly. Hugs to you all.

  • Good news! Kipawa's seems to be back to normal - solid poops on his walk this afternoon. Hooray.

However, with the reason probably being anxiety/over stimulation, I still need to work with him on this. I am going to contact my vet and ask if I can bring him there daily, let them take him into the back and bring him out quickly, then increase the time he is in the back. They are only about 4 - 5 minutes away by car, so this will be very manageable.

Hmmmmm…. just thought of something. Could doing this make Kipawa not want to go into the car (because the car always takes him to THAT place)? I guess the solution for that, if it happens, is to take him to his favourite parks each day.

    What do you all think?

  • Sure, take him to petsmart and give him a cookie, take him to the park, etc. Only good things…

  • @tanza:

Stress can cause loose stools, but I would have to guess that he has a bit of a tummy upset, then add some stress on top of that.

Good to keep him on the boiled rice and chicken a few days. And because it has little to no fat, cuts way down on the bowels overworking

Thanks Pat and Debra - I'm sticking to boiled rice w/chicken for another day or so, then as suggested, will add back his TOTW Bison kibble slowly. Then will slowly add back the veggies he gets with his kibble. Even though the problem was not due to 'bug critters' or an infection, his stomach still did experience a trauma. Best to play it safe.

My guy knows what direction the veterinarian's office is in…...and gets upset if we go that way, even after he hasn't been there for a year! OTOH, he also knows which way the regional forest is, and gets excited (definitely a different emotion!) when we head in that direction. He must have a compass in his head! :)

  • When I have to take those of mine that are phased by vet visits I also make sure I include an interesting walk near the surgery. In that way they know that the visit is just a stop on the way to the walk.

  • PS. Good to know Kipawa is recovered again.

  • First Basenji's

    @Kipawa:

… Kipawa FIRED some diarrhea across the examining room floor. Darn, had I have been thinking I would have kept a little of it to be tested.

My, what colorful descriptions. And only a dog mother could follow something up like that with a thought like 'Hmm, maybe I should've held onto some of it!' ;)

Bowpi's poops get runny super quickly when we have to go to the vet. Sensitive stool, I guess. Stress definitely has something to do with it, though she's good enough to hold it until appropriate spots.

What's stranger is I am now carrying a tiny spoon and zip lock bag in my purse. Like the boy scout motto, 'be prepared'.

Oh what a great idea! I'll definitely use this. Thanks! :)

@ellenw Cinnamon is a pack animal who wants and needs to be with her pack. I don't think she will disturb your daughter working, she just wants to be with her - closing doors and shutting her away from her humans is not good practice. Put a bed with bones and toys in a corner and let her know she can come and go as she pleases. She'll settle very soon. If she was too young to have a litter and then lost her pups, she needs her confidence building, not shaking ! Human companionship can do wonders for a Basenji !

hopefully Dex is just teething. I worked very hard to keep toy-drive in Zest as it can make training easier and more fun. And she still often gets a treat for retrieving or tugging her toys.

Our female goes to bed with dad and are male stays out with me. I think she likes to sleep on moms side of the bed and streach out. Ive come in a few times and found her with her head on my pillow. :)

I know it's bad, but I share flour tortillas. I eat them randomly and will toss Medjai a little piece of one. He likes to play with it more than eat it, but he also like to eat it.

problem with using a hot wire is that we have already tried that at the base of the pen when she was digging out and that never stopped her…we have also seen her hit the hot wire used in the cow pen at the trailer and that didn't phase her. Each time she has hit the wires nd kept going our first reaction us to check the wires and every time they have indeed been on and "HOT." We are working to secure the base of the pen as well as creating a cover to keep rain and provide shade while allowing a breeze and ventilation for the pen. In the meantime she is either in a borrowed kennel in the yerd directly beside the house that i can see from my room, in the house with me, or in the crate.

I have been looking for one in our area as well. Even if just for a couple hours when the weather is poopy. Living in Ohio or weather is 98% crap and 2% raining. I would love to start my own day care here. It would be so much fun to play with the dogs all day!
