Found Basil's sister!

Basenji Talk
  • So I wanted to find my breeder's contact information again since my phone wiped itself and I lost it so I went searching on Kijiji where I found the breeder. I couldn't find the original post but when I searched "basenji" a post came up asking for information on a puppy they just adopted, a black basenji from the humane society that was given up.. the pup even had roughly the same age as Basil (of course they don't know the exact date). Then I saw the picture… I swear it looked EXACTLY like Basil. She said she was all black with white on his chest and back legs... just like Basil. So I emailed her and said that I was pretty sure that this pup was Basil's sister. I included a picture of Basil and told her that I got the pup from a breeder in St. Malo. She replied saying they looked identical :) then asked me some questions about how he's doing with house training (hers still isn't there yet) and I asked about her biting... she said she does the spray bottle and it's helping. It's so cool that I found his sister though :) I'm sad that she was given up, the lady said she was given up by a couple that gave her up because they weren't sleeping... uh DUH you just bought a puppy... what did you think it was going to be? sweet dreams and kisses from the start? People really frustrate me. Anyway, I thought it was cool!

  • Very cool, hopefully you can get together!

  • What a great story! I hope you can keep the connection… have a playdate if you are nearby? :)

  • What a coincidence - are you going to invite her on to the Forum?

  • I was actually thinking about doing that as she had some questions about the breed.

  • We would love it if she would join.

  • How much fun..make sure you take lots of pics if you get together..:)

  • How cool that you found Basil's sister. I hope you can get them together.

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

No problems, lets me learn for future reference which is always a good thing :) Kaia is still petite. I haven't weighed her in about 2 weeks or so, she had been hovering just a smidge under 18 lbs, she may have finally gone over that now. That's why I was hoping to put off until July, wanted to make sure she had plenty of time to grow because we weren't too sure if she grows slowly or if she'll just stay petite. But I look back on her first pictures with us and wonder when she got so big!

I totally agree with pat - your vet needs to test a sample of Basil's urine before he can determine a problem.

This is the main problem right now, I suppose. The civil war's in the Republik of Kongo. I have been talking to a owner of Avongara Basenjis, who's daughter has been in Afrika with the last big expedition. And she had the same thoughts than I have: we thought, that if there are some Basenjis left (the ones which have not landed in the cooking pans), they are spread all over the forrest regions. Most of the human inhabitants of this region have left their houses for the next bigger city to find a little security and help there…. it is absolutely horrible, what mus go on there. But similar actions in other parts of Africa (Mali and Burkina Faso are always at the border of war like actions) plus in lots of these areas there are now many refugees from other areas which make the problems not easier for the habitants....http://www.azawakh.com/azawakhfriends/english/index.html Regards, Esther

There's no animal so resourceful as a hungry basenji. They were slighted you know for centuries being last in line at the cooking pot.
