Rescue Basenji sighting

Basenji Talk
  • Whilst on holiday in Scotland last week we became used to being stopped by people wanting to ask about Malaika and Kwame.
We were approached by a senior couple who said they had a Basenji girl aged 9 years old. In the UK it is quite rare to bump into anyone else with a Basenji so we had a good chat. It transpired that they had only had her since March, they had gone to the Dogs Trust, looking for a Jack Russell. The staff told them about a dog due in the next day and said they felt she would be perfect for them. She was being given up due to her owners ill health. The lady asked how we found Basenjis and proceeded to tell us how good her girl . I asked what colour she was and the lady said "Oh she's in the car around the corner, would you like to see her ?" Of course we said Yes.
She let Lolly out onto the carpark to meet our two. I think she is a full Basenji, although Howard is unsure. She was slightly bigger than usual and during the time she was out she had her ears down all the time, however once she got back in the car her ears became erect again. She seemed quite scared whilst she was out, i think she was possibly overwhelmed, given her circumstances.
We took some pics but my laptop has now broken so i can't access them yet.
I have to say it made our day to meet her and hear how she had been rescued.

  • Lovely story, we don?t see that many over here either. Just makes it all the more special when we do :D

  • Great story - it's amazing how you find other basenjis and owners in strange places. (not that Scotland is all that strange, it's a beautiful, beautiful place and I'm jealous I'm not close enough to easily visit)
LOVE the name Lolly btw. may have to use that name in the future. waht a happy name.

  • a little update !
It has transpired that Lolly's original owner has been trying to find out where Lolly was.
Through fb we have been able to make contact and i was able to show her some pictures that we took.

  • this story just keeps getting better and better!

  • I'm glad that Lolly's owner now knows that she is safe a well loved:)

It's great when you do see another one

  • That makes me happy to know her former owners worried about her.

  • By original, do you mean the breeders or are they the ones who turned her over to rescue?

Glad she is in a loving home!

Debra, it is Lolly's original owner who was concerned for her, for some reason she had to give her up, the second owner put her with the dogs trust instead of giving her back.
Lolly came originaly from a petshop
I have now on request from Lolly's new owner been able to put them in touch with each other so that information can be shared.
Lolly seems as if she's got a super new home.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

@lisafebre said in Help with Rescue Basenji Mixes: @eeeefarm i have tried the clicker but it scares him! So I make "kissy" noises as he comes in for a treat. That should work fine. Just be consistent with whatever you use, but you may need to adjust the timing. You should use your "marker" the same way you would a clicker, i.e. to mark the behaviour you are rewarding. So perhaps another sound or word (I tend to use "yes!") to use at the moment he does the behaviour (or an incremental move toward the behaviour) that you are trying to encourage. Remember that the click or marker word ends the behaviour and signals the reward. It does sound like you are making good progress. At some point as petting him becomes normalized you will want to phase out the treats and reserve them for whatever your next behaviour goal is, perhaps climbing into your lap so you can cuddle or pick him up. Again, go slow, don't restrain when he has come to you. When you reach the point where you can make the approach instead of him making it, and he doesn't shrink away, it will be time to go on to handling, picking him up, etc. at which point if you have initiated contact you change to releasing him when he is quiet, not if he attempts to leave. Key is don't ask for too much too fast, and if there is a difficult point go back to where he is comfortable and proceed again. You'll get there!

I'm not sure why your pictures are not showing up. I'm going to experiment. [image: 1467823614030-bathtimex.jpg] O.K. that seems to work. I dragged and dropped it and I see it. Now to check whether others can also see it! This is a picture of my two girls, taken a long time ago......probably in the '80s. I am wondering if the picture you are trying to upload is too big. Trying that now. I am not seeing the picture I just uploaded, so that may be the problem. ![0_1467823932526_Bathtime.jpg](Uploading 100%) Yes, I think that is the key. Downsize your picture and I bet it will work properly. As you see, I get the same uploading message that you did, but no picture, when I try to upload a large file.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
