Basenji puppies!

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hi all. Im new to the forum but i was just wondering if someone could help me out. How much does a Basenji puppy usually cost?
    Thanks :)

  • In the UK you would pay between ?500-700 for a puppy.

  • I paid 800 euros from my pup in 2008.Remember purchasing a dog isn't bargain shopping and look for up to date health testing for both parents.

  • On the West Coast from a responsible breeder, pups can range from 900.00 to 1200.00 depending on the breeder.

  • Why do you ask how much a Basenji puppy usually costs? Do you have one in mind? It's very difficult to give a price because breeders here don't seem to be consistent in what they charge (it seems it may be a bit different in other countries). Also its not always a matter of quality - some breeders offer a lot more than just a puppy - it could include collar, feeding bowl, crate amongst other things. The main thing is to buy from responsible breeders who are always available to give plenty of advice at any stage of life and are also willing to take back the Basenji (again at any stage of life) should you decide you can't keep him/her.

  • Welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of good info here.

  • Price did not come into the equation when we were looking for our basenji. We had an idea of what the cost would be. More important to us was the breeder, their dogs, the testing they do and the willingness to take back a dog for whatever reason were what sold us. We wanted a good hearted, ethical breeder. Luckily we found one. Hats off to those breeders who truly care about the Basenji.

I agree, price should be the last consideration IMO - type, temperment, health and suitability should come before that :)

  • Yes i have been very interested for a long time. Iv been in contact with a Breeder from England for a while now and they are expecting a summer litter. While iv been speaking to the breeder i feel comfortable that she will be more than helpful and is willing to all of the above. Like you said the price was the last thing on your mind, this goes for me too. I was just wondering along the lines so i could save to buy my puppy.
    Thanks for the help :)

@senjisilly said in Basenji Puppy in US: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY I second this motion! Seriously... to quote the animal shelter I got my Aussie/Border Collie from during the holidays back in the day... "A dog is not for Christmas. It's for LIFE!" Let people who've been in this breed for some time, have contacts, know the in's and out's guide you. Picture in your mind a 15-year commitment. Help this breed by supporting responsible breeders who are passionate about the breed. How do you spot a Responsible Breeder? Insist on health testing PRIOR to breeding. Know your breeder's goals for the breed. Meet them! See if they're in @Zande's Pedigree Database. Read the Basenji Club of America Illustrated Standard on @tanza's site. Most of you won't ever show your dog and that's OK! Your breeder should know the Standard inside and out. They should be able to talk to it. Read it and ask them how their line supports the standard. Ask them what their breeding goals are, what they've been working on, where they are going, etc. That's fair. A good Basenji breeder is going ask you a TON of questions, AND THEY SHOULD! We want good solid safe homes for puppies, retired show dogs or dogs that don't want to show. Not every puppy will be a show dog. In fact, most won't be. Litters on average are between 4 and 6. Responsible breeders need pet homes for puppies that aren't going to part of their breeding programs. You can support responsible breeding by providing pet homes. Just make sure your breeder will make time for ALL your questions both before and AFTER the purchase. Mine will! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The only place I know in the UK that actually requests copies of health certificates from breeders is www.champdogs.co.uk I am sure if there are other sites and or places someone will be quick to correct me, but this is the only one I know. Hope that helps.

I would also look on Petharbor and Adopt-A-Pet. It can be difficult to find one under 1 year of age. You might have to go farther in your search or perhaps raise the age to 2 years. Jennifer
