My (Possible) Basenji Mix

    Below are images of my rescue girl, Peanut. Peanut is about 4 years old, 45lbs, and quite the character! At first I thought she might be a Pharaoh Hound mix, but as I've gotten to know her, I don't think so as much.

    The first thing people notice are those ears, the second would probably be her forehead wrinkles. Peanut likes to chortle/yodel when she's happy and will 'talk' to you when she's really pleased (she's become more vocal since I've had her). She does bark, and will try to have the last 'word' by barking quieter and quieter instead of actually being quiet. She has the most well padded paws of any dog I've ever had and could trot for days if she wanted. Her hair coat is rougher and longer than a Basenji's, though it does only have the one layer. Her tail is also not curled. She is probably between 20-25 inches tall at the withers (I haven't actually measured her). What really gets me is her personality. She is quirky and clever and a little bit absurd. She's always trying to find new games to play and new loopholes in what I've asked her to do (you want me to sit? Okay! I'll sit … on this wall over here...). She likes to watch everything that's happening and her favorite game is to flush birds/squirrels from the bushes. She is incredibly intuitive and expressive. She also likes to sit on the backs of couches and pounce on toys. Anyway, enough talk, on to pictures!

    Peanut is obviously FAR too large to be a pure Basenji and her coat length/tail are not correct, but her personality and absurd cleverness, combined with some of the physical features I mentioned above, make me really consider the idea that there might be Basenji in there...somewhere... Thoughts and suggestions are more than welcome! I love my girl either way, and honestly, I would like to try and figure out if I should be asking my vet about/watching for Fanconi syndrome!

    Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum!     Wow! That is certainly a fascinating mix! ;-) Two sighthounds and a Spitz in there, so will probably see much the same sorts of behaviour as Bs….I bet she's quite a runner too! Good look with your girl!

    Oh yeah, he looks way more like a b-mix to me than a lot of the pups listed as basenjis on Petfinder. And they mention he's not a barker. What a cutie! Someone go get this guy! :D

    Rafismom, we started him out in a crate, but he hated it. Cried something fierce. We then started leaving him in my son's room, and he was absolutely fine….well, until he started crying again. Then we gave him roam of the house while we were gone, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I know. I'm lucky! He absolutely hates for us to leave, but he's good while we are gone. No complaints here, for sure. Maybe it's the possible black lab that mixed in that makes him so calm? He has his moments, especially outside when he sees a squirrel, etc., but overall he's a very calm pooch. Just last week, I was walking the dog at a local park when I hear a woman saying something about the dog. She was a good distance away. I then realize she was talking to me and asked if my dog was friendly. I said, "yes" and she came over to pet him. She told me that the dog reminded her of her first dog. She said her first dog was a basenji. After more chatting, she said that it was actually a basenji mix, but that my dog looked a lot like hers. She told me how much she loved that dog and told me all sorts of stories about her. Such a nice lady. Gave me a few bits of advice and about a half hour later we parted ways. This is my first dog, and I've been amazed at how friendly other dog people are when I'm walking him. This has been a great experience.
