  • First Basenji's

Welcome! Always interesting to have new members from so far away. Do you have pictures of your B's you can share? Are they common in Indonesia?

  • Welcome to the Forum from the UK. Where are your Basenjis from?

Just let us know exactly what advice you need - there's bound to be plenty of good advice here.

they are 4th generation from africa, and 3rd generation from UK, 2nd generation from Austria, and grandparents are from Jakarta (based on their sertificate). and now i live in Surabaya

previous owner said they are always live in crate and leash, and after they arrived here, apparently they're on poor condition. They got scabies and Hachi is blind. hopefully (and i believe) by joining this forum i can find any tricks or advices on how to train them because it seems that they never been trained before, at all.

  • For potty training, it will be back to basics. Don't expect this to happen overnight. These dogs are older and sound like they were crate dogs, so they may never keep their crate clean. You will have to take them out to potty after every meal, every play time, even every hour if you find they are not eliminating enough. I would probably keep them in one area, and as they keep that area clean, you can expand their living area. I'm sure other people on here have more experience than I with older dogs.

how about Hachi, the poor blind one?

Welcome to the forum. Potty training should not be that different for Hachi - need to take out a little after meals, and maybe about every two hours - praise praise for going outside. She cannot see, but she certainly can smell, and they learn quickly the smells of outside and the smells of inside. Hachi will probably learn along with the others, Basenjis seem to "follow suit" when they are all being taught. Good luck. Please post pictures when you can. As I can't see your post while answering, I do not remember if Hachi is male or female - please forgive if I am calling a him a her.

  • Hello and welcome to the forum.
You sound like you have a lot of hard work ahead of you but it will be worth it as Basenjis are a great breed.
Sounds as if your three have had a hard life so far.

  • I notice your other thread, that you just got an older dog and the dogs must potty inside. Check the thread for info since it seems you have 3, not one dog. If all these dogs are new to your family, patience is going to really be needed to teach them, especially the blind one, to use the litter box.

I totally agree… and one point about a blind dog, once they learn the layout of your home, do not move furniture as they learn the position and it is critically important, IMO... that your floors are not littered with "stuff"... so picking up after one's self is very important. Blind dogs do quite well with some considered attention to details

  • i apologize, my wife has joined this forum too, and asking same question
    her user ID is queendom.

today they have bath schedule, we will take some picture after bath. this is first bath since they arrived. the vet told not to bathing them for 3 days after they got anti scabies injection
