So I am crate training Watson and he is having difficulty adjusting.

He does well when I put him in and he knows we are in another room for a short time…there is some whining but nothing else.

If we leave the house though even only for an hour he gets so anxious there is always a big mess when we get home and he needs a bath.

What can I do to make this easier for him?

But you put in the time and effort to MAKE a change. That's what good owners are about. :) You can also stuff a kong with a little peanut butter, or cream cheese or even canned food and put in freezer. Then the dog sitter has a long lasting treat to give him when putting him back in. :)

Thank you very much for the info and the sites you have sent, and sorry for the delay in replying (my computer was down for a while). I am going to start with the Relaxation Protocol and see how it works. Also I have just started the Control Unleashed book so I am going to see how it goes too. By the way, how long did your basenji take to start showing selfcontrol?

I think I will buy a wire crate also. LIked that the plastic ones are more "den" like , but like you said I can just put a blanket at night… Thanks

Thanks. http://www.omahavaccine.com/ Omaha Vaccine.. many times you can get shipping for free depending on the size of your order… and I like the General Cage for crates... and if you want a great crate pad or just a pad in general, look at the Bully Pads.... they are great and last like crazy.... and wash really easy... I use them especially for whelping... turned Lisa onto the too... even her "ripper" has a hard time destroying them.
