  • Adorable pics, thanks for sharing…Sin is a great name for a basenji!

  • Adorable pup!

  • What a handsome boy - i love the 2nd picture where he looks as though he's stalking prey.

Sin was an early well-known kennel name here. It belonged to Diana Berry who later bred Ibizans under the same affix. I loved her Basenjis and her ethics as she was one of the early breeders who refused to cull the creams and also bred 'blue tris' despite them not being to the KC standard. But then, I too am a rebel!! I do hope you choose Sin.

  • very cute baby!

true story - Jet the trying's real name is Jerlin's Saint or Sinner (there are some other letters before and aft his name that he wasn't born with, but that has nothing to do with this story). Linda, his breeder, was calling him "Saint". I told her we'd have to change his name as I couldn't call a basenji "Saint". She pointed out that I could call him "Sinner" based on his registered name. I replied, in semi-mock horror, "Linda, I'm not about to call a basenji SINNER."

  • nice pics, i have a red and a tri, i want a brindle next!

  • I told my aunt that we should just name him BoB… He will eventually fit a name, there are soooo many good suggestions I keep trying out all of them looking for the one that suits him! Thanks everyone for all the compliments we sure do love him and are looking forward to his future! :D

  • The vampire in the TV show Moonlight was name Mick if you want the name somewhat connected to his registered name.

I was always told not to pick a name you don't want them to live up to or down to as the case maybe. People say I shouldn't be surprised that my "Little Ox" is on the small side. I do remind them that even a small Ox would probably be big. Of course, I was probably asking for trouble calling him Interesting Times.

  • It was more of a joke to name him BoB.. we were having a conversation of why one shouldn't chose a name they don't want them to live up to and I joked that well I guess I had better name him BoB then incase he is one that wants to live up to their name! =D Today the new names are manny (a variation of Norwegian for moon) and Titan (one of Saturn's moons).

  • I like Titan, but I *really like Truffle ;)

  • What did you end up naming him?

@Nemo: The local municipalities generally determine the number of pets that are acceptable within their juristiction, not the state. My experience it is usually up to 2 dogs and/or two cats or some combination thereof. Often rural areas or towns are more likely to allow more. A couple I knew were suckers for stray animals and at one time they had about 6 dogs and 7 cats. It was a challenge for them to find a place to live and they had to move out to the country. Althought that is an extreme example. I'd probably have about 3-4 dogs if I could, but that isn't going to happen unless I move. I live somewhat in the country in Maine and after you posted about only being able to have 2 dogs, I decided to call my town office. The first 2 people I talked to laughed…like the question was ridiculous. Then I called the code officer. He didn't know the answer but thought it was a great question and needed to call me back after he looked into it. For my town, I can have 5. Any more than 5 and I have to apply for a kennel application. FWIW, there was a huge problem with a puppy mill in a town about 45 minutes from me. A responsible basenji breeder (BCOA member and not a BYB) who had 7 b's as pets (hasn't bred in a couple years) was put thru the wringer by ugly neighbors because the town passed a new ordinance (after the puppy mill was broken up) limiting the number of pet dogs. This b owner had the dogs long before the puppy mill ever came to light. After a huge fight with the town, she has since been grandfathered, but needs to register as a kennel if she decides to breed another litter.

Great pics. I notice Zaire is always in the sun spot. The dogs and gardens look beautiful!! Take some time to research your new plants in the yard as well. Congratulations on the new home. And, btw, that face of your Parsons is to die for!! What a cutie–-so expressive.

@weeziesmom: I have tried chew bones to curb his chewing however he tries to take weezies and they fight over them You can teach him to leave hers alone. Make them both sit for their chew; give hers first and make him stay with you when she dashes off to chew. {helps him see that she gets one/he gets one, and also gives her a head start!} Make sure he knows you have one for him also. He must sit and make eye contact with you before he is given his treat. Once they both have a chew, make them stay in different spots. Stand between them, moving your body silently to block his attempts to get to her. If necessary, tell him "no" or "leave it". It shouldn't take long for him to learn that he gets his and she gets hers. Eventually, he will just look when you hand her the treat and will sit and stare at your face until he gets his own, then he'll run to his own spot to chew his bone.

@hdolbow: he wasnt too happy with me, or her, at first… now they play... he can jump on the bed or couch to get away if he wants time to himself...he wont lay next to her yet shes starting to mimic him.. if hes laying in the sun on the couch, she'll lay on the floor with the sun shining in the window.. :) i think he would like her more if she wasnt into biting everything lol And until she looses those teeth… there will be lots of times he is not happy with her... but the one nice thing about having an adult B in the house is that he will teach her "biting" manners much better then we humans ever can...
