Is my dog a Basenji?

  • What ever he, he's cute! They have a lot of cat like traits also, will clean each other. It's a long list of what the different ones will and can do. MIne didn't like dew on the grass but would jump into the pond after frogs.

I tried to give mine a bath when I first got him. He had been outside on a ranch most the time with his old owner so he was filthy. He HATED the bath

  • Corgi mix, I would say… could be with a Basenji. Honestly, most dogs don't like baths

his nose looks Corgi, I just looked it up. Rest of him looks basenji

  • Looking immediately at his face, I would say Corgi mix, but then the third picture where he's chewing on the rawhide, his legs look quite long and skinny. Wonder what happens when you combine a long-legged dog with a short-legged dog?? Is one dominant over the other?? (Sorry, I know nothing about canine genetics.)

There's also that "scoop" to his waist, which seems rather narrow. I could see him being a basenji-corgi mix.

    And this…

I dont' let him off leash. Did once and he took off around the block

    … sounds pretty basenji-like. =)

yeah, he's rather tall. I'd say around 12 inches or so at least. The corgi's I saw were pretty short in their pics and chubby. He's pretty thin

  • mixes are always a mystery…. both of his parents could have been mixes themselves, and their parents mixes as well. it's always good to make a guess at what breed seems dominant, though, at least so when people ask you what kind of dog you have, you can give them an answer. it might also give you a sense of what to expect in the future, and what to keep an eye out for, health-wise. i think you'll find a lot of good info on this forum - it sure sounds like he's got some basenji in there somewhere!

  • He looks like a chihuahua to me :) He is cute!

  • Whatever he is, he is adorable, and I am sure he will make a wonderful companion.

I was thinking Chihuahua , too. I Googled Chihuahua and this site has a wide range of Chihuahuas of varying quality. Scroll down to the third picture. Similar in many ways.

  • LOL Robyn, I see more chihuahua too.

he's rather big for a chiuauha though

  • My first thought was chiuauaha, he has a bit of a domed forhead, i can also see Basenji and he sounds like he has some traits. A Basenji has two pads joined at the bottom on each foot.
Great that you have rescued him and i look foward to hearing all about him.

If you see Chis that are actually from Mexico, they are a lot bigger than what you see here in the US. They vary A LOT!

  • Does he have a doggie smell?

  • Hard to tell - but whatever I'm sure you love him. My first thought was Corgi because of the ears. See what develops- how old is he? Welcome to the forum.

  • Corweenie! (Corgi x chihuahua)

Whatever he is, more pictures! :)

  • The question about the doggy smell is a good one - basenjis do not smell like dogs. If you stick your face right into their fur the comparison is like sticking your face into a nice clean healthy cat - warm and not really a discernable smell. Except their feet. Their feet smell like Fritos sort of.

Thank you all for your kind words! It almost brings me to tears of joy right now to see her laying in the grass by the pool on a beautiful sunny day in California and knowing that shes gonna be OK. Of course I wish I could have done more for more dogs in her village (I DID help bring 2 of her puppies to the US though, they have arrived safely in Colorado today!) Segbwema, I know what you mean about the dogs having to fend for themselves… The village where I lived for 8 months didn't have any running water or electricity... so it definitely put things in perspective! Right now Laliti and I are BOTH feeling like we've won the lottery : ) Patty, yeah I hope Laliti doesnt take the word "mutt" the wrong way : ) I think I'd pin her to look a lot like a Basenji/Black lab mix.... (obviously shes not mixed with any lab, but just for the sake of describing her appearance) because she has a diluted Basenji appearance with a larger body and a thicker coat like a black lab....
  • Basenji's are lake dogs? Who knew!

Becca and Tucker are certainly more adventurous than Spencer. He wants no part of water– coming from the sky or puddled on the ground. When we're walking, he will screech to a halt in front of a puddle, like he's waiting for it to move. Becca and Tucker sound like fun dogs to have around. I saw their pix in another thread, and they are so cute-- bet there's never a dull moment at your house!
