Registered Name

So, since Dexter's breeder didn't tell me anything at all about a registered name or anything… Does that mean that I just come up with something random?
Will there be a point to his name, as in, will there be any need for it again by me or anyone?
I read a few threads about it, but I just want to make sure....

The registered name is only used in show catalogs and when you are enrolling him for various events or getting Microchipped, health tested etc, the call name is obviously Dexter, so you can do anything you like if she did not give you specifics. I like the Dexter series of books, I just finished the latest one - Dexter is Delicious.

Sharron- What specifically do you mean "What does the breeder of Dexter say?" About the name, she didn't say anything at all. They just gave me the AKC application paper, and then I realized that they had given me the wrong one because it had female and white and brindle checked off- neither of which describe Dex lol. So I talked to them, and they said sorry for the mistake and that I could just do it online… -
Since the breeder is not interested in either putting their kennel name on the pup (you will find with responsible breeders that they have requirements that include their kennel name and either a theme for the litter or maybe some other requirements).
This means you can register him with what ever name you want.

You can look up names of other basenjis in Sally Wallis's data base. Always he k to make sure the name I pick has not Already been used

You can't just do it online. The breeder must supply you with the right registration papers. If they fail to do so, you can file a complaint with AKC.
Not going to go back and look where you got the pup cause I don't need the aggravation, nor you my response. Just glad you are here with good folks to guide you.

You can register onliine with the breeder supplied numbers, I did it with my whippet 5 yrs ago.

Yes, but not when the papers given are for a female of a different color. The breeder would need to give different number for the right dog.

Not true, the paperwork part that is for sex and color is filled in by the breeder or new owner on the registration slip. AKC doesn't have any idea what litter number goes with what puppy (sex/color) until they get the competed form back, they only assign the litter registration numbers to correspond with the number of puppies said to be in the litter. So if doing on line, you can mark the correct color and sex.

Yes, but don't the number of males/females that the breeder sent in have to match? I guess because I filled mine out and submitted for the new puppy owners, I never did online. But I do know I had to report the litter size and genders. If the breeder messed up and sent in wrong numbers, isn't that a problem?
But I see what you mean, if she only mailed wrong ones, the person with Dexter's papers (hopefully she just messed up those 2) can simply go online and do their paper and it will all even out.

First, I have to say that the breeder should do the responsible thing and get the papers straightened out, not just ignore the problem. Not a very responsible thing to do.
That said, since this is a less then responsible breeder, I would guess that most likely not all the pups would be registered anyway, as BYB could care less about that.
However, if by chance they are all registered, you are correct that the number of pups by sex are part of the litter record, so could be the last to be registered could really have a problem.
Another lesson, check your paperwork before you "pay" for the puppy

We have already established that Dexter's "breeder" was disreputable. How many litters did this person have? If she had more than one litter then it is entirely possible that the papers that were supplied with Dexter may not have even been from the litter he was in.
