Today's doggie walk

Off Topic
  • This morning, Kipawa and I went on a great walk that my sis and her Chow introduced us to last week. The area is very close to us and was called the Vancouver Wireless Station. In 1949 it was a signals intelligence station. Eventually, due to urbanization, it closed in 1971.

What is left there is a most wonderful and safe place for off leash dog walking. The area provides lots of running room for an energetic basenji. But alas, my camera battery was not charged up, so I will have to take pictures next time. We met many folks with their dogs and Kipawa had a great time. Some of the area is grassy (dried yellow grass clumps) and I let my imagination go and pretended that Kipawa was in Africa running through grassy fields.

It is also a bald eagle nesting area. In one tree I counted 16 eagles. All in all we probably saw about 50 eagles.

Here are a couple of links that outline the Vancouver Wireless Station. The first has some photos of what it looks like today. The second link has more information about the reason for the station. There are little information stations that you can read as you walk around. It was quite the self sustaining community.

This story has some elements of urban myth in it - see http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/stuffedtoys.asp As they point out its not only stuffed toys that are treated with anti fungals/bacterials - fillings of duvets/doonas/quilts/comforters/ pillows/cushions/pet beds are all potentially treated with the same chemicals. Also there is no details that if you wash toy/quilt whether the chemical is removed/reduced. I would also be very surprised if there were any standards imposed on what is deemed appropriate or safe for pet toys - there seems to be little or no regulation as to what can be fed/added to pet food around the world. That is not to say that there are very good manufacturers of pet food/toys who take the research upon themselves. However if I went along to my local craft store and bought a commercially available filling, how would I know whether it had been treated or not?

We were in Ohio when I wrote it. Ohio was admitted to the Union on March 1, 1803, but Congress apparently forgot to vote on the resolution. It was finally rectified on August 7, 1953, which technically makes Ohio the 47th state. However, it is counted as the 17th because it wasn't Ohioans who created the problem. Who says our Federal government isn't efficient? Zanesville, OH is the location of the Y Bridge, which starts and ends on the same side of the river. But that's where we were. The wolverine is the official state animal and nickname of the state. Fur trappers from Canada brought pelts across the state and folks further south assumed (there's that word again) the pelts were trapped in Michigan. The Detroit Red Wings assembled the Russian Five, who propelled the Hockey team to the Stanley Cup in 1997. Within a few days of the win, one of the team members was permanently benched in an auto accident, but the remaining four were instrumental in the 1998 and 2002 Stanley Cup wins for the Red Wings. We will be in Grand Rapids, MI tomorrow morning. Ms. Basenjimamma: The temperature here right now is 51F. :)
