Interested in trying Lure coursing

Basenji Training
  • Where in BC are you? I am in Delta, and found out that there is a lure coursing club in the Coquitlam area.

Great question about lure coursing affecting the prey drive instinct - I will await the answers with you.

    Welcome to the forum!

  • we are in New West. 1 of my basenjis came from Delta ( co bred byTerrarust/Beaubri ) the other came from Beabri alone. Ya id love to hear what people have to say. As the prey drive increases the ability to recall may decrease which would be a turn off for myself

  • We have been coursing Dolce for the last few months and have not seen any change in her behavior. Though she does always steal the shopping bags when we come back from the grocery store!

  • Not that I've seen, he does however perk up whenever we drive by a nice open space that he thinks could be a bunny field. Make sure your dogs have a good recall before you start. Most judges deduct significant points from dogs who cannot be caught at the end. There is one pharoh in our area that will be in the negative points if she does not learn a recall.

  • Are you coursing Dolce this weekend at the AKC trial in GA? I have a couple friends from MO going down with their 5 dogs. We are staying home this weekend as we are coursing in TX the following weekend and don't want to make too many day long trips right now with the puppy, although she travels better than my whippets.

Yes, my wife will be taking Dolce Saturday & Sunday to the AKC trials.

  • @hansfingas:

Hi there, I have 2 basenjis and am interested in lure coursing possibly with my dogs and just wondering whether or not it affects the dogs behaviour prey drive when not coursing?

No. It is natural for a Basenji to chase creatures that run away and they will do that even if they have never seen a lure. Basenjis know that the plastic bag isn't a real animal. They chase it because they have fun. :)

  • And depending on the dog, some have more prey drive then others…. All of my Basenjis have been coursed, some do really well, some not at all.... But they all have/had prey drive when it was the real thing.....

  • We took Mojo lure coursing for the first time a couple of weeks ago- he loved it! There was one lady who said if they ever do actually go after a real animal- say a bird or rabbit- and catch it, they will lose interest in lure cousing- they will want real prey.

NOT TRUE… gggg..... Maggii loved to course... caught and killed 3 squirrels in our yard... never made a difference. Mickii caught and killed 2 ground squirrels on outdoor off lead runs... never made a difference (Oh and add one bird plucked out of the sky)...

C-Me, just a year old now.. loves coursing... at 4 1/2 months caught her first squirrel in the yard and at 7 1/2 months one baby bird out of the sky

@ibi_n_sane: yess it was a great day :D cant wait to see the pictures of Job ( Janneke's boyfriend ) that he made from our dogs too! we only took our galgo and 2 ibizans to the coursing, that gives us all our hands full enough haha the basenjis and our oldest ibizan hound can come the next time, allthough they enjoy the racing track too! ( the settlement of the racing track allows us to take all dogs at the same time and not having our hands full with these 6 haha ) I loved to see Barry (the galgo) run.. he ran beautiful…. :D And yes... I liked Cy and Smitty also... :D

This coming weekend there is LGRA and NOTRA in Orange County. My mom has the information. I think there is also some racing in December in Orange County. Don't know what the show schedule looks like or if these conflict with any. I do know this time of year is the racing season in So Cal since the parks are available.

Yay glad to see some more local interest! As far as training, there is a group called SONG (Sighthounds of North Georgia) that does informal practices once a month or so depending on man power & weather. These practices are a great way to introduce a new dog to the lure. However, for most dogs its an instinctual thing & they don't need much training. Lola & Callie both caught on to it their first time. I just let them both watch other dogs doing it first, then let them go & they did their thing. Website for SONG: http://www.nghounds.info/index_files/Page430.htm It doesn't get updated frequently, but go to the lure coursing practice tab, scroll to the bottom & there are instructions to get on the e-mail list for upcoming practices. Hope to see you lure coursing soon!

Good for Zahra! Sometimes they just get so excited they just have to pee! But it's great that she went back on the course. Dude has a thing for brindles. His wrestling and racing buddy here at home is our crazy Energizer (you know, she keeps going and going…) brindle Amina. So when he went against a brindle boy in the first heat he charged gleefully over to him at the end - the boy was not impressed! In the second heat he was up against a dark brindle girl who even looks like our Amina. At the end of that one he ran over to her and they took a tour of the field together. He's not aggressive about it, he just wants to play! He totally ignored the reds that were also coursing. Terry
