23.8 pounds!!

  • Well, after being a very fussy eater for all of his first year!! Ayo has been eating incredibly well for the past couple of months. So much so , that I think maybe now I may be feeding him a little too much!! I weighed him a few days ago and he was 23.8 pounds!!! LAst time he weighed 18! but he was very skinny, and I was concerned. So , i dont know, i will watch and see if he keeps gaining or stays there. He is exactly 17" tall so i think maybe he is a little too heavy fro his size…???
First he is too skinny.. now he is too fat!!

  • Pictures would help…. can you feel his ribs? Should be able to do so and a fit dog when running, you should be able to see a faint outline of the ribs.

  • It's very difficult to say without pictures. Some Basenjis are quite stocky and weigh more. Like Pat says feel his ribs and also feel his front - if there is quite a fat layer there he is too weighty.

  • I have one boy who is 24lbs and a little plump, the other is 27 and very lean, depends a lot on muscle ratio too.

  • Thanks, your right, will post some new pictures tomorrow..

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

@emilia May we know just why you have decided to spay her now ? Unless spaying her is going to substantially improve her quality of life, I would advise against it.

@dogo-0 said in 8 month old basenji pup with hair loss on the ear tips: when I scratch the tip of her ears, it looks like dirt is coming off If you live in a particularly cold climate, the edges of your pups ears may have a touch of frostbite. That would explain the dark skin cells that are sloughing off when you scratch or rub at her ear tips. Try to protect her ears in the cold. Be gentle when you rub the ends. Depending on the severity, consult your Veterinarian, antibiotics may be needed.

@Schouiffy: my girl is so different.. I have to work to keep weight on her.. She is eating about a 3/4 of a natural canned food plus a bit of dry a day. ppl still tell me she is skinny, so then I let them hold her leash for about a min before their jaws drop at her strength… must be all the mountain climbing.. cause she pulls like an Ox. My girl Rio is like this. She is all muscle, high metabolism. We call her "super model thin". She eats plenty. She gets 1/2-3/4 of a can of wet food plus 1/2 a cup of dry. In the spring when she is racing, she eats a full can plus dry. This is why she loves her coats, she has no extra padding to keep her warm.
