Help with digging!

Basenji Talk
  • Today is the first nice day in New York City in a very long time. My Lillie was hanging out in my backyard and brought some of her toys outdoors. I always check on her every few minutes. I noticed she brought her fuzzy ball outside and went to check on her. She was underneath my deck stairs. My phone rang and the next thing I knew she was on my deck licking her paw. When I went over to her it was bleeding. I brought her in the house and tried to look at her paw but it was bleeding alot. Of course I panicked, called the Doctor and I was told to bring her right over, which I did. Well, 2 stitches inside and 3 outside on the pad of her front left paw. I am heartbroken! She will be on antibiotics and painkillers for 2 weeks. She has an E-Collar and a pink bandage. The receipt from the vet stated "NO DIGGING FOR LILLIE".

Any suggestions on stopping a basenji from digging? Should I get a pen and confide her to a certain section? I'm thinking I will let her go in my backyard (when she is healed) but I will never leave her alone. As soon as she is finished running around I will bring her in the house.

I am so sad - Lillie is laying on my bed making the strangest noises and she is looking sad also. I know she is still groggy from the anesthesia. I hope tomorrow will be a better day. Thanks for listening.

  • What was she digging in? Can you tell?…. What is under the deck stairs that she was digging in? I think you have to start there... typically Basenjis are not really diggers unless there is something there, like a critter.... and if digging in dirt, that would not have cut her pads.... If you can figure out what/why she was digging you can correct that problem...

  • I do agree with Tanza that yous hould check what is under the deck stairs that cause her booboo. My B loves to dig so I think you should check out what can hurt Lillie in case she is inclined to be a digger like my B. Hope she feels better. Give her lots of hugs and kisses.

Thanks for all the help. I got the martingale one for now. Maybe I'll get the hound collar later, but I figured I'd get the kind I already know and swear by.

@ELERICKSON40: Yes I agree. She is quite the mighty hunter and her nose is to the ground always!! Alot of times when she is digging in the couches and chairs she is trying to bury a bone. She will stuff a bone into the corner and actually take her nose and push imaginary dirt?? over the bone. It makes us laugh!! Yea, my B does the same, the first time I saw this I was so intriged, they are so smart. It is a funny thing to watch, Sahara will take a bone around the house in her mouth for the perfect place to bury it. If she can't find a place she is happy with she will prance around whinning the sadest noise like she is so sad. I actually pitch in and help her find a place, and she will most of the time agree on the place, she checks it out and then walks off. These dogs spoil you for any other breed, they are the best.

Well, Tosca is just fine I think:) I was kinda worried last night, as the emergency vet said it would probably be ok since she only had half a pill, but they said I could call poison control to be sure. Well, that was going to be pretty expensive (55) so I wasn't too crazy calling about half of a pill, plus she seemed ok, and the vet seemed pretty confident. Then this morning I was a little worried again because she wouldn't eat more than about half her food, which is extrememly unusual, she usually gobbles it right up! But I had to go to work, and I called our usual vet on the way and they said it shouldn't be a problem. Luckily, now that I am home tonight she seems fine:) Thanks for the suggestions, we just got Tosca in Feb and this is the first time I have ever had a dog ( I was deathly scared of them as a kid) but she really has grown on me, she is so sweet, and not like a normal dog.

@Mantis: FYI, Caesar used to do the other digging you are talking about. laying on his side stretched out on the floor and digging on the carpet. he put a hole in our carpet all the way to the concrete and would never leave the spot alone after that. i put in hardwood floors to fix the problem and used my basenji as my excuse to get them< LOL I typically will let him dig if he is making a bed on a blanket, but they can be descructive if you dont watch them. Beta used to dig her bed in my bed and was able to tear a whole in the sheets. Almost like she was digging to China….so funny.... Max actually dug a hole in my matress…..
