Podengos

  • Just when you thought you never had to hear about them again - here I am.

I forgot about this (and when you see it you will see why - dear God I know I"m 'chubby' but that couch was so low even short me had to scrunch up and the camera angle - ARGH) they edited it a bit so when I corrected
myself when I mispoke - they edited it to my first shot. There was also more
done with Indera talking about Pequenos but some of that is gone too. It was
funny cause they sent me the information in advance on what questions they would ask - and then asked me different questions - ARGH. Dont be too harsh folks.

You want to look for Episode #44

    Enjoy (or laugh)

  • For those who are interested in seeing some updated Podengo Pictures check out my photo proofs at:

Photos by Laurie Erickson of course - if you wonder why there are random props with some shots - that is the item that was in their puppy picture so when I purchase and have her wipe off the collars and make me look skinny and young (LOL) I'll post the 6 week pic with their almost 2 pictures - you will also see my pequeno (little podengo)

    Enjoy the outtakes.

  • oh Diana…what lovely pictures..I especially love the ones with you in it and all the dogs join you...beautiful. So it is Libby, Hanna, Indira and the basenji, what is his name? Did I get them all?

  • That basenji has good self control…not attacking the feather boa and all. I'm surprised I didn't see feathers floating through the air in the picture. :)

  • That is Thumper - MIJOKR'S Fancy Footwork SFB and she is mo 13 oe 14 years old. She was more annoyed about the indignity. But when we did this when that group was 7 weeks - feathers were flying.

  • Actually the group picture with me only includes the girls - there were 2 boys too - BUT Libby was in season and we sure didn't want that kind of picture. LOL

@dmcarty: I typically only breed when I have some good home lined up as well. But when I started to investigate the breed - there were 19 Podengo Grande Smooth registered in the world. So I started the project to see what we in the US could do to increase the numbers and to motivate those breeders in Portugal to register their dogs. We are starting to see some success and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have 11 puppies. I do have some homes and some will go to different parts of the US for breeders of other size Podengo to show off, I have a few that are staying by me and a friend has offered to take in a couple to continue socializing when I have to go back to school in the fall. Once they get their shots and I can get them out and about - I think I will see some interest. My good friend Wendy (Harehill Hounds) has been very helpful in building some interest in the Beezer community as well. It really sounds that you know what you are doing, so everything will turn out fine , I am sure about that! meanwhile you can show us loads of pictures of the bunch :D

It most likely is (sort of) If you are in sections of the country where there are a lot of Portuguese - many of them had dogs sent over or brought over with them from Portugal to use in rabbit hunting. The older hunting pack goes back to the late 1890's. They do not register them and it is unclear if the lines have remained pure or if they have included other hunt pack dogs. I have trying to establish some contacts within the hunt community but at this point - we have to focus on making sure the documented dogs are placed where they are safe and can continue with the breed. Much as a basenji - they are not for everyone. It appears that the middle size may be the more problematic and I'm not too sure why. I will tell you - after having a barkless dog that it's hard to get used to any barking. She looks like a nice little dog - and is trained some - happy to provide information should your aunt choose to adopt her.

oops Robin forgot to answer your question - she is eligible in FSS AKC for Companion events - I plan on starting with Rally - I may do some lure events just the baby try it out ones because she is not old enough until November and we don't have much lure coursing in Minnesota in November. Plus I have to say that going to lure coursing without having John Siverson there would feel a little strange - I have a trainer who is very interested in agility with her and would actually show her in agility for me - which given my propensity for falling down might not be bad.
