Chewing

Basenji Talk
  • Many things, but it's fun show basenji what to chew
    Cheers

  • My fave moment was the first day I met my baby girl she was running around with all her siblings and she starts chewing on the corner of a post in the kitchen at her breeders house and looks at me with this sweet B smile and cute soft eyes going to town on this post and I was like… ohhh I see how its gonna be loll! Luckily with training we don't have any issues like that now a days. Once as a puppy she was pissed she was in her cage and her wire crate was too close to the wall she decided to chew and dig a hole into the sheet rock and then the bottom of the plastic tray where she tore up the carpet. She was not interested in her kong or any of her bones she had in her cage, the wall was way more interesting.. now she has a plastic crate that isn't so exposed. She has not had one problem with the crate maybe it feels more homey or something. She is becoming a better dog everyday, I am so proud of her, best baby dog ever! <3

I buy 12 inch 'sticks, thick ones, and then toss the last 2 inches to prevent the 3 am barf. My guys are older and the sticks last for several days. They would be too expensive if they ate them in an hour!

@renaultf1: lol - what is the craziest thing you have bought for your dog? A purse. Lol Hahaha… Well I got this dog food/toys/stuff catalog in the mail. They have nail polish for dogs, in about 5000 different colors and shades, and those little glittery stickers that you put over the nail polish. Purse is nothing!

@YodelDogs: Raw soup bones from the grocery store. I have the "butcher" cut them into 1 1/2 inch lengths so they are too large to crack open and small enough for the dog to get all the marrow out. After they have been licked and chewed up and are smelling "funky", I boil them which sterilizes them. They can then be kept "forever". Mine also lone the hard Nylabones, preferably the dinosaur shaped ones. The poor things get decapitated rather quickly though. :p Too funny! These two things, soup bones and dino bones, are the only things that my two B's LOVE! I would also add the Galileo bone made by Nylabones is super sturdy too. :)

@tanza: Hoofs can also cause slab fractures of the teeth, so be careful… and there is nothing worse then getting up in the middle of the night and stepping on a well chewed hoof.... NOT I've stepped on one of those and danced around a little.

I knew that Ringo was in the right home for him when in one of the updates his owners wrote to say that he was a wonderful dog and the only problems they had had so far was he would steal socks and underwear and chew on the potted plants but they couldn't complain because those were just normal basenji traits.

my dog loves Bully Sticks. I usually buy the ones made by Red Barn. Here's a link: http://www.redbarninc.com/c-11-bully-sticks.aspx I only buy the 12" or larger variety. As soon as the stick is chewed down to about 3", I throw it out. another long lasting one is a filled hoof, by the same company. http://www.redbarninc.com/c-23-filled-hooves.aspx warning - these stink!!!
