HELP ~ What to do?

    My 8 year old Basenji has STOPPED eating! Tuesday she threw up / Wed was fine; Thursday laid in her spot all day & threw up 3 times; Vet on Friday & did all kinds of tests & cannot find anything wrong! No blockages as they did a Barium test & all was OK. Friday didn't eat all day / Saturday still wont eat (not even hamburger!) Any suggestions / ideas?:confused:

    Did they do full blood work? I have had ones done with Barium, but with ultrasound showed a blockage that needed surgery. The biggest clue was the results of the blood work…..

    Hmmm Dan, you and I are on the way wave …... I don't trust anything until I have seen a full blood panel... and not eating for that many days with throwing up, in my mind would be a red flag to do an ultrasound....

    I think we posted at the same time! :D I cannot think a vet would say everything seems OK. Agree Pat on the ultrasound. Could it be poisoning! Do you have mushrooms in your yard?? I would take your Basenji to the emergency right now.

    Well, I have one here who was a little off her food on last Saturday and Sunday. Monday was lethargic and would not eat. Bowel movements were normal. Off to the vet, full blood work and exam. Slightly dehydrated so we gave fluids. She came home wolfed down her bland food. Bloodwork came back normal. Appetite slowly waned through the week. Friday back to vet but this time she had some foul smelling poop. So we are waiting for a fecal but with the holiday won't get a result until Monday. A quick ultrasound didn't show anything abnormal. She is currently taking some broad spectrum antibiotics since there is no specific indication about what is wrong. She is back to wolfing down her bland food. We will see how things go from here.

    So if they haven't done bloodwork that is really important to check organ function since if liver or kidneys are are off they will often go off their food. Ultrasound will also show issues with organs or possible blockage. Also, if she has become dehydrated then that needs to be treated.

    Yeah I'd have the dog in the vets, ivs and nutrition pumped in and full panel run. This is truly life threatening.

    I wouldn't wait another day if she's not eating yet - please take her back to the vet at the earliest.

    Thank you all for your thoughts & concern. They did do an ultrasound also & all checked out OK ~~ Getting her to drink water & some milk last night. Woke up OK this morning & took her for a VERY SHORT walk (about 16 feet) She came back in, went to all of her favorite places in the house & I had my other girls talk/pet her (just in case) & after her favorite (the 3 year old) gave her a kiss on the head I took about 1 min with her & she took 3 breaths & passed away @ 3:30 today. :-(

    Wow, I wasn't prepared for your updated post maggieleahy. I know there is nothing anyone can do or say to help your broken heart right now…..but I bet your sweet girl she knew much you love her.

    Oh, Maggieleahy, I am so sorry about your loss. Your girl knew how loved she was by your family; please take comfort in the fact that she was with the ones who loved her most when she left this world.

    I lost my Lucy unexpectedly last April, and like you, it was a sudden shock. I still cry for my girl, and I mourn her loss…. they say time heals, but that's later. Grieve and cry, and wish she was still with you... In spirit, she is still there, curled in her favorite spot, basking in the sunshine.

    @k9collars: I'm not sure you'll be able to stop this problem with the harnesses. Often times, hair loss is from the hairs getting into the weave of the webbing and then it being plucked out. For that problem, you'll need a fabric against their skin that would be of a tight enough weave that the hairs can't get into the weave. Second problem is the friction. The dog is continually in motion rubbing, while the harness is stationary. Back and forth, back and forth. Nylon webbing may not be abrasive when touched, but over time it will have the effect you've noticed. Perhaps a softer lining might work (satin, polar fleece), but over a long distance, it too may have the same result. Time to reach outside the Basenji family to find rollerbladers that take their dogs with them. They must've come across this problem. Nick Lexington, KY Thats what is great about Ruff Wear they really go above and beyond to prevent the friction wear and the hair being pulled out too

    I wish. Gypsy is getting old and having more problems – sometimes loses her balance, etc. -- and in response Jazzy is getting meaner to her. When the dogs are outside, Jazzy will wait on the porch for Gypsy. When Gypsy approaches the porch to come in, Jazz will run out growling and starting biting at her face. I've been able to curb it a little by letting Gypsy in, and then shutting the door and making Jazzy wait and sit before letting her in. Little things like that... Although other times she will curl up with Gypsy and sleepthere's never any kindness shown; Jazzy bosses her around more than ever, often even chasing Gypsy off of her bed so that Jazzy can lie down on it {I always make Jazzy get back off and let Gypsy back on}, even though Jazzy has a chair and her own bed. It makes me sad. Keoki on the other hand, seems quite oblivious and treats Gypsy the same as always. While those two never snuggle up, they are play-time buddies. Gypsy livens up a good bit when Keoki invites her to play.

    I do agree with Tanza that yous hould check what is under the deck stairs that cause her booboo. My B loves to dig so I think you should check out what can hurt Lillie in case she is inclined to be a digger like my B. Hope she feels better. Give her lots of hugs and kisses.

    Well, Tosca is just fine I think:) I was kinda worried last night, as the emergency vet said it would probably be ok since she only had half a pill, but they said I could call poison control to be sure. Well, that was going to be pretty expensive (55) so I wasn't too crazy calling about half of a pill, plus she seemed ok, and the vet seemed pretty confident. Then this morning I was a little worried again because she wouldn't eat more than about half her food, which is extrememly unusual, she usually gobbles it right up! But I had to go to work, and I called our usual vet on the way and they said it shouldn't be a problem. Luckily, now that I am home tonight she seems fine:) Thanks for the suggestions, we just got Tosca in Feb and this is the first time I have ever had a dog ( I was deathly scared of them as a kid) but she really has grown on me, she is so sweet, and not like a normal dog.

    I do now seeing what you say I do agree with a more verbal and/or stand up and as you say "higher dog" split them up. And I have seen this many times, where my boxer would do that at a dog park, he's such a dork lol, some dogs would start arguing and he'd go shoulder his way inbetween them and just stand there. I can also understand your point that there are a high number of boxers that don't get the clue and subtle hints, and part of it JMO is back to training. And the whacking them in the face, yep thats a boxer, lol. And I can understand that Basenjis don't like that. When we frst met our neighbor that had a Basenji, Reggie tried his normal "boxer" techniques (but thankfully he's not a face wacker) to get the B to play, pawing at him, low woofs, etc, since that didn't work he took the B's toy and stood there squeaking it at him and then took off in a game of chase, they were friends until we moved away.
