Basenji-less in Austin, Texas

  • Batman is cute! Love the ears! :)

  • I have the cutest picture of him playing with a 150# Saint Bernard mix. I didn't get the shot of him trying to BURROW under the big dog's chest, but it was some kind of sweet. And Foolish, the big guy, didn't care a bit.

  • Great - I should think he could easily disappear in the St Bernard's mouth!!

  • Patty, Batman has no fear and seems to have a preference to larger dogs as playmates. There was a Boston Terrier puppy (we think they are about the same age) who does not know how to back down. Batman got very cranky and moved from play to STOP IT really fast. Dugan doesn't get dog messages at all. Batman decided Einstein, the Catahoula (100#) mix and Foolish, the Saint mix (150#) were his faves.

  • Okay. I'm about to BURST. I just got word that my home visit is approved. Now to wait for the vet okay and then to set up when to go get my girl! If I were a Basenji, I'd be doing a B-500 around my work. Think they'd notice? :)

  • I am so happy for you Arwen.

  • Wow, Arwen..I am so happy for you..can't wait to hear that you finally have her home with you

  • I have the contract signed. Will be sending it in when I get home from work. I'll be calling the foster tonight as well. WHOOO HOOOO!

  • No longer Basenji-less in Austin. Nayru is at my apartment now. She and Batman fell in love at first sniff. Literally "sniff?" RUN PLAY RUN PLAY Collapse on couch together for nap. I couldn't have asked for a better interaction. I'll post pictures soon.

  • Oh I am so excited and happy for all of you..jippea..it finally happened..

  • Oh yay!!! Now you need a new thread :D

Can't wait to see the pics..

  • Thanks y'all! I uploaded one picture but the others are on Facebook. Forgot to send them to myself to upload for sharing here. :)

  • Hooray!! I'm so glad the two get on well - obviously this was meant to be. I look forward to the pictures. hope you have many many happy years together.

  • Congratulations!!
Awaiting pictures with bated breath. =)

  • Psst, go to "Show Off Your Dog" and breathe. LOL

  • OMG I don't know HOW as this is a subscribed thread, but I missed this. Then got notice of an Arwen adopting Nayru in TX and knew it must be you. Senility is a sad thing but CONGRATS big time! Now have to go find your new thread and pics.

    @Arwen:

Debra, I do hope you can find your Chow. As an ex-groomer, that is a breed that I was never very fond of. The good ones were amazing but the bad ones really ruined that breed for me.

Chows… I adore them. But stupid owners and bad owners can result in nightmare dogs. Chows not raised right do have a lower bite threshold than most dogs I have been around. Chow breeders deny it, but we have had chows in my family ... well since my mother was a child so all my life and 20 of hers. Someday join our FB chow group and meet what they should be like... almost all of us pet owners too, mostly rescues, so not the cream of the crop and still great dogs because in great homes.

  • One of my chow customers was named Tedioso Great. Teddy was an amazing dog. We called him a lab in a chow coat. Then a fellow groomer clipper burned his groin area. He never even flinchec, much less bit. They brought him into the office to show the burn (it was a fairly bad one) and Teddy jumped in my lap. LOL I think he thought I could save him. I adored that fuzzy lump.

Others? Oh wow. Most of my stories about them involve stitches and plastic surgery. Not on me but on my fellow groomers. I charged a premium and made the owner stay with the dog.

@allyn said in Basenji mix?: Meanwhile I know that like a Basenji, he should never be off leash, and we always need to make sure the gate is securely shut, I have had Basenjis for a long, long time now. I have always let them run off lead in the woods away from traffic. They have all been taught - and I have had up to eight at a time although am now down to one, soon to be two (!) - to return to me if I whistle. Basenjis CAN be taught to run free and to obey commands. Yes, gates should be kept shut, tightly, at all times. But away from traffic, they can be trained to behave and allowed to run free. I have bought a puppy sling for my new boy so I can take him to the woods with Hoover, and let him meet lots of people and thoroughly socialise until he has had his shots. I don't intend to deprive Hoover of her freedom just because of the puppy. He will learn to walk on a leash but mostly he'll be the hunter nature intended him to be.

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.

It was actually the vet tech wasn't the most brilliant thing on the planet… needless to say I found another vet the next week and they think she might have some bulldog in her... what a mix. I believe that she definitely could have some bulldog in her judging by the way she lays around the house.
