Any good Vets in NJ with experience in handeling our special hounds??

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I have taken suuny to 3 vets in his 5 year life span and dont really like any….......... I always had better luck diagnosing sunnys problems better myself than the vet. I always come back with NO REAL ANSWERS but always a HiGE bill . This month alone i spent 500.00 dollars for two vet visits.

I can overlook the bill if the i had good resolutions .............

    Any suggestions ....Please help

  • Where in NJ? I mean it's not a huge state but certainly not worth driving from north to south or east to west.

IF you are near Bristol, PA… just a hop across the bridge... I highly recommend Pets Best Friend, Dr Shirley Jeffers. She was research vet before, utterly great, and her Vet Tech Brenda is my go-to person even though I now live in GA!

  • Wow. that is great . Bristol, PA is not far at all from me. I am in central jersey for another 2 months but then i move to south jersey in burlington county, so from bordentown, nj bristol shows to be only 20 min drive…..............I LOVE IT . i drive 40 for my current vet office.

  • You'll love her then, she does rescue stuff, is simply wonderful.

I live in the east suburbs of Pittsburgh. I take my B to Norwin Veterinary Associates. Ask for Dr. Harvey Bendix, if he is available. He diagnosed Senji with his liver disease and basically saved his life. He's open to alternative as well as traditional medicine.

@Benkura: His brother is my other boy 'Cahnce' who is Clear. It's just Chance & Trouper are chalk and cheese and both have good to offer the breed. I did wonder whether neutering him would be beneficial or not. Wasn't sure if it might induce too much stress. However, I would have to stop showing him if I did that and he already has 1 CC. I would not worry about doing it now… only something to consider "IF" he starts showing symptoms.... When Jaadii came down with Fanconi it was before the DNA test was available, so no one knew until he started spilling sugar. He was fine 11 months out of the year, but during Basenji breeding season he was a mess... and that was a lot of stress on him... So being neutered was not stressful, it was NOT being neutered that was. That said, not all dogs are alike... each are different... just putting in what we found with Jaadii....

When I took my puppy to my vet, he said he had little knowledge of the Basenji, but he would start reading up on them. Since that time, he's thanked me for the opportunity, and says he is learning more all the time - at our last visit for final puppy shots he said he felt he was becoming quite an expert - if you come across a vet who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about them, he could quite easily love the challenge and become great on the Basenji issues. I told him I'd sent for the DNA marker kit and had Shaye tested (thank God, it was clear), and he launched into a really good discussion about the symptoms, illness, etc., and said he was glad I'd done that, but maybe in a while we would do some blood work to be sure of everything. I feel very confident with him now - so, a good vet with a love to be challenged can be an answer too.

@Phebese: We take Max to the Banfield in the Petsmart on Cobb Pkwy in Acworth. We have gone to many different veterinarians but only found two that we feel comfortable with. We have the Banfield insurance which really helps, but most importantly he is comfortable going there and we trust them. He has been there twice in the past couple of weeks getting a cyst removed. They call in between appointments to check on him and see if we have any concerns. We do not like all the Banfield clinics, in fact the one on 92 we did not like. Another good vet is Randy Esbeck at Sawnee Animal Clinic 770-887-1900. He is a Basenji specialist. It's in Cumming Georgia. It's just to far for us to go. Good Luck, Max's Mom (Emily) As they say, it is not the place but the Vet that is working there…. so while many of the Banfield clinic might not be good, when you luck into a good Vet.. that makes the clinic... IMO

Your dog suffered a similar injury, although not from ppoping, but that agrivated it. We had him on similar meds and it has been about a month now and he seems fine. No damage to his spine. Hope all goes well with your little Jet!
