Kennel cough? Upper respiritory infection?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I work at a doggy daycare/boarding place. I brought Congo in a week and a half ago, and he's now getting very sick. There is some sort of "virus" going around at work, however it's not kennel cough. They supposeably did the test and it came back negative. We run a very clean facility and this has really taken us all by surprise. Whatever it is, it's very contagious. Anyway, the next available apt is on Tuesday night so I'm going to take him to the vet then. I feel so horrible. I hate seeing him in pain. Has anyone ever experienced any upper respiritory infections/kennel cough before? He started sneezing/coughing the other night, now he's gagging and hacking. Anytime there's pressure on his throat, he has a massive coughing fit. He just seems not like himself. Ugh!! Any advice before I can get him to the vet?? Anything to make him more comfortable? I put a humidifief in my room so hopefully that will help. :(

  • Sounds exactly like kennel cough to me

And if I had a Vet that would not see a dog that is clearly having a problem until Tuesday nite, you can bet I would find a new vet

  • Unless there are some new tests, I am fairly certain that kennel cough cannot always be "tested" as there are different varieties, including bacterial and viral. Most dx KC based on symptoms. Unless he is running a fever and gets worse, it usually runs it's course. Had Congo gotten a KC vaccination? While it doesn't always prevent it, it often helps make it a milder version.

Best advice– no excitement/exercise, avoid collars as they make them cough more and check about what expectorant you can use on dogs. These sold for dogs seem to have about the same stuff ours do... http://www.allvetsupply.com/excosy.html but go with child dosage.

  • Any updates? I hope your vet took a chest x-ray.

  • went to the vet today. he said i caught it early. he didnt hear anything in his lungs, but his glands were enlarged. he gave him a cough supressant and antibiotics. after putting a humidifier in my room, its really helped his nighttime coughing fits. so he has another apt in a couple weeks. just going to give him lots of rest and his meds. he will be good as new. doc said he's in great shape for his age. could use a teeth cleaning tho! haha

Thank you, All, so much for your time and helpful advice! Okay, we did something yesterday that may have been foolish but at the time his cough had gotten bad and after spending so much on vet bills and prescriptions, we decided to invest in a bottle of infant cough medicine. We gave a small dosage to Mack and after coughing up a big glob his coughing has subsided and he appears to be feeling better. We won't be repeating the dosage. I do love the idea of elderberry and honey! However, our fear of negative results after trying the infant medicine had us so on edge that if Mack does start coughing again, we will call the vet. Thank you all, again! I appreciate you!!

@debradownsouth The Mainstrem does not necesarily have the best answers. The reason you have those particular sources is due to the FACT that ALL Vets resent the competion from the Homeopatchic Vets. Horse Vets are more interested in being Homeopathic Vets because they know that Drugs are not the ONLY solution to solving a problem. One of my Mares has Gastric Ulcers and after trying to help to get rid of them it became apparent that there are too many. I had a full body scan of this particular Mare and she has so many that there is no way I could 'Scope' her. Since the Gastic Ulcer Meds did not work I am now treating her by diet which includes a cube of Alfalfa Hay every morning. This type of Hay absorbs the Acids in the Gut. All of the Hay is grown on the Farm. You simply cannot ignore the Homeopathic Modality because the Veterinary Community will always resent the Competition. A lot of the Homeopathic Modalities have been used for hundreds of years such as the Guinness Stout. I buy that stuff by the Case every Month. Now after a woman delivers a child in Ireland she is given a Pint of Guinness Stout because it is beneficial in restoring vitamins, minerals and protiotics that have been lost during Labor and Delivery. You just cannot deny things that have worked for 100's of years. The Vets dislike the Competion so they will always say that it is an invalid Science. It clearly is not. Thanks. A

I hope your pup is better soon. I do know that it can take a long time to treat pneumonia, and a 'tracheal wash' with cultures can point you to the correct antibiotic if puppy doesn't improve. Years ago our young dog had pneumonia and we went through 3 antibiotics with poor success, the cultures showed an unusual organism and we switched antibiotics and he was on them for another 3 months but recovered and lived to be 15. If you are not comfortable with your vet, go to a specialty group for a second opinion. We often go straight to our local specialists, saves time and money in the long run.

They perscribed Batril for Caesar when he had a UTI and it fixed it up right away. What brand food are you using?
