tri factored black dog - Kk ayat
tri factored red dog - kk ayat

Use punnett square for K locus and another punnett square for A locus:

    ….......K........k
    k….....Kk.......kk
    k........Kk.......kk

So, we have Kk (twice) and kk (twice)

    A locus:

    …............ay..........at
    ay….......ayay.....ayat
    at..........ayat......atat

We got ayay, ayat (twice), atat

Than put both, K and A locus, together (every K result with every A result):

    Kk ayay - black
Kk ayat - tri factored black
Kk atat - tri factored black

    kk ayay - red
kk ayat - tri factored red
    kk atat - tricolor

    Or, with your letters:
tri factored black dog - Kk Yy
tri factored red dog - kk Yy

    ….......K........k
    k….....Kk.......kk
    k........Kk.......kk

    …............Y..........y
    Y….......YY.........Yy
    y..........Yy......yy

And than again, put all together:

    Kk YY - black
Kk Yy - tri factored black
Kk yy - tri factored black

    kk YY - red
kk Yy - tri factored red
    kk yy - tricolor

  • @Monika:

    Big Y is a red
small y - tricolor, saddle, agouti and recesiv gen.Can not have four different meanings

Yes i know that. But when you put ay, at, etc. it confuses me. I need the coding to be is Y,y, K, and k. I think thats it. but i cant follow when people add in different letter cuz i dont understand it :(

Which sucks cuz when you use letters i know it starts getting easier and easier lol

Kk Yy - tri factored black
Kk yy - tri factored black

    kk YY - red
kk Yy - tri factored red
    kk yy - tricolor

OH! ok! so you dont do them all together. you do letter with letter and then add them! Oh ok!!! Thank you soo much! That helps alot!

  • letter "a" located in the locus A

letter y,t,w,a, talking about hair color
    otherwise you can not save

  • Letter D intense color
    letter d lightened the color

  • @Tiva:

    Kk YY - black
Kk Yy - tri factored black
Kk yy - tri factored black

    kk YY - red
kk Yy - tri factored red
    kk yy - tricolor

Where did you get the bold ones. I understand how to get the others but if you do it and add them together it makes no sense. …to me

OR do you have to do

    1....2
    3....4

    1...2
    3...4

do you have to do 1 with 1, 1 with 2, 1 with 3, 1 with 4....then 2 with 2, 2 with 3, 3 with 4....then 3 with 3, 3 with 4....then 4 with 4. and then take all the alike genes and group them. then take all the unalike genes and
that is how you go the 2 extra genes?
(I used 1,2,3,4 just to make it easier to understand than using letters K, Y, etc.)

  • Tiva helping me, thank you

  • I am beginning to be wrong.I'm going to sleep until tomorrow. (11 _55 PM)

  • from K locus we got:
Kk (and again Kk) - 1
kk (and again kk) - 2

    from A locus we got:
    YY - a
Yy (and again Yy) - b
    yy - c

    1 + a = 1a (Kk YY)
    1 + b = 1b (Kk Yy)
    1 + c = 1c (Kk yy)
    2 + a = 2a (kk YY)
    2 + b = 2b (kk Yy)
    2 + c = 2c (kk yy)

  • @Tiva:

    from K locus we got:
Kk (and again Kk) - 1
kk (and again kk) - 2

    from A locus we got:

    1 + c = 1c (Kk yy)
    2 + a = 2a (kk YY)
    2 + b = 2b (kk Yy)
    2 + c = 2c (kk yy)

Oh ook i think i get it now, thx for the help in clearifying it. so would "A" always be YY, "b" always be Yy and "C" always be yy? or is that just for this example?

  • Just for that example.

  • oh. so how do you know what to use then. :(

  • It depends on the alleles of the dog. The litter that I co-bred and have been posting puppy pictures of the parents are KkYy and KkYY. If you do the two punnet square way instead of the 16 punnet square way you would get.

    At the K locus

    ….......K........k
    K........KK.......Kk
    k........Kk.......kk

    At the A locus

    .............Y.............y
    Y..........YY...........Yy
    Y..........YY...........Yy

    So we get

    from K locus we got:
    KK - 1
Kk (we get this twice) - 2
    kk - 3

    from A locus we got:
YY (we get this twice) - a
Yy (we get this twice) - b

    1 + a = 1a (KK YY)
    1 + b = 1b (KK Yy)
    2 + a = 2a (Kk YY)
    2 + b = 2b (Kk Yy)
    3 + a = 3a (kk YY)
    3 + b = 3b (kk Yy)

  • hmmm. I guess i dont really get this part. How do you do a 16 punnet square? Maybe that will be easier for me. (maybe not lol)

ill try to examine them some more and see if i cant get it down.

  • I will see if I can get a graphic for a 16 square punnet tomorrow.

  • Ok thank you :) id like to see that

  • @lvoss:

It depends on the alleles of the dog. The litter that I co-bred and have been posting puppy pictures of the parents are KkYy and KkYY.

What is KkYy? is this a Black basenji with a tri gene? and KkYY. is this a red Basenji with a black gene?

these are, ironically, the only two that i didnt understand what they would be as dogs.

  • KkYy - a black dog that can produce blacks, reds, and tris
KkYY - a black dog that can only produce blacks and reds

  • Cole - has a black and white dam and a tri dad. Based on his mom's litters we believe she is KkYY which makes him KkYy. He has to carry tri since his dad is tri.

TC - has a black and white sire and red and white dam. Based on pedigree and breedings, we believe she is KkYY.

  • O ok this makes sense. Is there a way you could help me determine what my girl is? Ill link the colors of the parents and maybe you can help me determine what she is.

    http://prairielandbasenjis.webs.com/colorinheritance.htm

I put the link on my website. With a couple questions for you on there. Once i figure everthing out i wont be having it on there anymore. If you could try to determine what she is i would greatly appreciate it! But also if you could remember how you did it and explain it to me so i can understand. Thank you!

actually there was a discussion on the Clean Run groups about cooling coats. I know CR sell several different types and CR is very good about testing what they sell.

I saw that you have a sewing machine – its not hard to make your own coat. I made one for my previous beasties with fleece and wool. I made it with a high colar (for the backside of the neck) and an indentation for the tail and a big belly and chest band (I used snaps at first but then switched to velcro). It worked pretty good for our single digit temps (and the occasional below zero walks to the corner). My current beastie refuses to go out the door with a coat on, however. When the outside temps are below 10F she won't stay outside any longer than necessary to go potty - the squirrels can run around all they want then! With respect to booties, mine will at least tolerate them when we go for walks but it's more for the road salt. However, the good pair I bought this year leak somehow (maybe through the stitching?) and she doesn't like them with they get wet inside. Nevertheless be sure you get the best you can find.

Our red girl dog has the same problem. Freaks out when you touch her ears with a swab, but loves the inside of her ears rubbed when petting her. You know the two handed ear & cheek rub. That gave me an idea!. I found some real soft white - tight gardening gloves (unused), gave her an ear massage and cleaned her ears out. it worked well. I was extra careful not to push the dirt down her ears, but did kind of a wiping motion out and away from her inner ears. She loved it!

My C3 has the same itchy skin problems too mostly due to the 1001 allergies he has…but I use the Aveeno Oatmeal Ointment to help calm the itch & I also put Brewers Yeast tablets & Fish Oil tablets into his food to help keep his skin & coat healthy. Sometimes we need to bathe regularly (like once a week ) in the Aveeno oatmeal shampoo to help as well. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. We have been running him with our other dogs in our yard, we have about half acre or so, and he is fast..He loves it, just don't think he is used to out heat yet, it is already about 85+ degrees and very humid…I think he looks good, he is definitely babychunky, not fat, but what I envision a puppy looking like before he grows into his own body. We will keep up with what we have done so far and see what he turns out like...can't be bad, just beautiful.. Basenjimamma
