If Otis' parents have been Fanconi tested…

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • How old does a dog have to be to be tested for Fanconi? How old for the eyes to be Cerfed?

Type the parent's name or registration number into the search field. If they have been tested then they will show up. If not, then it will tell you cannot be found.

As an example, you can search my dog's name, Sherwood's In The Nick Of Time. You should find that there are 5 entries in the OFA database for him including Fanconi.

    http://www.offa.org/results.html?all=sherwood%27s+in+the+nick+of+time

If you click on one of the links, you will be taken to his OFA record and can view all of his results and the results of his parents and offspring.

For an example with the registration number, you can search HP13054204. You should find that there are 5 entries for her in the OFA database.

Thank you for this. Very helpful. So can the parents be tested and not be recorded on there? and also how old do dogs have to be to get tests done for their eyes. I know hips are 2 yrs and i believe Fanconi is whenever (right?)

  • The parents cannot have had the Fanconi test done and not be in the database.

Eyes can be tested as young as 8 weeks old for the first time but need to be retested on a regular basis. Since eyes change with age, it is important to monitor them well into old age.

O ok. Do they have to be tested if the mother and father are CL?

Ok Thank you. I was curious and it makes sense i would agree to moniter them as ur rught, eyes change with age. :)

Well technically no, I guess not, but since this is such a new test it is always better to be safe rather then sorry, and it is also good to have the est done so his/her results get input into the database. The more dogs we have tested the less likely a fanconi dog is to be bred..ultimate goal is no more fanconi.
I had Otis tested even though he came from a CL/CL mating..I wanted to be sure and I wanted to have one more dog in the system..

If your dog has fanconi and you catch it early on, chances of his/her life being not quite so miserable is better and we all want that right?

Thank you for the reply :) I will get her tested just to do it. I agree more dogs in the database is better. and i DEFFINATELY agree with "NO MORE FANCONI"!! I would love for Basenjis not to have to worry about fanconi. I wish there was a way to make everyone not have carriers either. IMO, i dont think ppl should breed clears to carriers because it just makes more carriers which wont help us rid the disease any more. If i ever start breeding i am going to be sure I dont get any carriers because i want my lines to be clear/normal. :) i just think its better this way

  • Not breeding to carriers is a terrible thing for diversity and could endanger the breed. That kind of thinking has led to some very bad bottlenecks and outcomes.

oh really? But arent there enough (CL)s for that not to happen? I didnt realize. well thank you for letting me know. It just seemed better to have clear lines but i understand where you come from. I must have thought there were more Basenjis than there actually are.

This is not a better way. If everyone did this, there would be terrible loss of diversity and long term it would lead to the end of the basenji breed.

Though it is true that breeding Carrier x Clear will produce carriers, it also produces clears so is a way to preserve genes from the carrier without producing affected dogs.

Here is a picture of L'Ox. He is a Clear offspring from a Carrier x Clear breeding.

  • ya actually when you put it that way, that is true. I wasnt thinking when i said that, i appologize. its just a toss up which ones are carriers and which are clear. I forget you can get clears. I just wish there was a way to breed more lines without getting carriers. But ya im sorry i shouldnt have said that, carriers do offer an array of genetics necessary to the breed.

The more data that is in the data base, the better people can use the that information as this is a Linkage test only… and errors can be made either human or test....

@moetmum: I understood that one of the main reasons dogs come back IND is because there isn't enough DNA to test. I don't think that is correct? This is from the FAQ's at www.basenjihealth.org on Fanconi Testing. I still think you should contact Jon Curby, if you have not already My dog came back indeterminate, what does that mean? Should I re-test? Answer: Our linkage test uses 3 markers (for a total of 6 alleles) to predict Fanconi status and requires that all 3 be in agreement. An indeterminate result means the 3 markers are not in agreement (view sample results) and therefore cannot predict Fanconi status.

@Terry: I heard a rumor, wondered if anyone knows if it's true. The rumor was that an affected dog has been identified with 2 clear parents. Pat, I know you're usually up on this… Terry That seems to be the case, Lisa will most likely also chime in. They are now retest that dog along with his parents. As we all know there is always human error and the samples may have been mismarked. I have no doubt in the test (and I know that others will mostly likely use this as a way to discount the test), but I will stand on the over 1100 samples that have already been done and they all seem to be as they should. IMO and I have a sample that was most likely taken at the same time, that there was either a problem when the sample was sent in or there was a problem when the DNA was extracted. At the same time and the sample taken at the same time, there is another dog that is showing as Carrier from two clears… again that is being retested also...
