Tooth question

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Well, Shera had her checkup and everything looks good except…she's cracked one of her back teeth pretty bad and the vet would like to extract it. Said she could go on fine with it as is but it might also get infected. It's toward the rear of her mouth and I have to admit, it looks pretty bad.

So the real question is has anyone else had to deal with something like this? The vet said there's little to worry about. The wound should heal up no problem but I figured I'd ask the pack here if they had any experiences they'd care to share.

  • I would make sure you go to a vet that has the capability to do oral x-rays for the extraction.

  • I have had more then my share of Basenjis that needed extractions… never had a problem... bounce back in a day or two. And the Vet is right, they can become infected easily (at least IMO). Basenjis being very stoic, they could be uncomfortable for a long time before you might realize it...

+1. My older guys have had several teeth removed and are all doing fine. Yes, especially as they age, it may take a day or two to bounce back, but really better in the long run.

  • Good to know. Thanks for all the responses. She'll still have the other side of her mouth to chomp on stuff. :) And yes nkjvcjs I'm sure they do an x-ray at this place before proceeding.

I know one thing…next time around I'm gonna be an anasthesiologist (sp?). That's like half the bill! :)

  • Arwen has CUPS, and had 8 removed before we got a protocol down that has worked for the last 2 1/2 yrs. Removing a tooth is not a biggie. One getting infected can be.

  • And just because she can "chew" on the other side, food stuffs and bacteria can still get in through the bad tooth. Honestly, not something to put off….. the sooner the better

I think that in the future that it would be important to get a blood sample when or just after she is having the episode…. if it was a plant, critter bite... by now the toxic substance would most likely be gone.

@agilebasenji: I have a friend who has a nonbasenji dog that was just diagnosed with Fanconi. They (owner and vet) started the dog on the Gonto's protocal. (yea!) I know there is a Fanconi list, but did not know if it was open to just Fanconi affected basenjis or if other breeds were welcome. Also, is it a yahoo group? thanks It is a yahoo group and it is open to anyone with a Fanconi affected dog, or so I have been told.

@basi: This is what I liked about the German system and many other countries in europe, being that all dogs have to be tested before they can be bred from. @tanza: Is the DNA Fanconi test reconized as a required test in those countries in Europe that require pre-testing? And it is really no different here… most have or are testing, but there are still people that do not and still have their heads in the sand about testing... I wish that all testing was public knowledge like the Fanconi test.... like hips, eyes, etc... Following more in depth from Basi, she is also meaning that in Germany breeders will recieve VERY hefty fines for breeding without the proper testing and permissions from the breed club. They can have their kennel license (of sorts) revoked, be denied from entering shows and registering dogs of their breeding or from other breeders). A dog has to be of a certain age, and received a set amount of show awards before it can be entered into the breeding permissions exam. Then a actual show judge and member of the breed club evaluate the dogs to be entered into the stud books.

Both Sugar and Dimisi are fastidious cleaners of their private parts. Every once in a while-Shadow doesn't really like cleaning himself-I put a little corn syrup(I'm talking about a dabbing of it) around his private area to facilitate himself cleaning himself.

Thank you..again! Yeah, it doesn't bother him a bit. It is kinda hard to see, just a dip at the top of his hip. I'll wait it out.:)
